It would help if you indicated where they might have lived.

All the way up until My GGGG granddad they all lived in Scotland mostly found in Lanarkshire but we think that my GGGG grandad's name was possible John Cross and if that is true it is possible he was born/lived in Bothwell or Lanark, Scotland

Hi Darcy,  Thanks for joining our one world family WikiTree.

So, I found some info on your Alexander Cross and started a WikiTree profile for him.  [[Cross-10565|Alexander Cross-10565]].  I will add a bit to his profile.  You will need to connect your profile to his by adding the in between generations.

Thank you so much very useful appreciate it so much I'll check it out now
I've just checked It out and It doesn't look correct although it could be as I don't have much info on the man. But from what we think we know he was born around Lanarkshire Scotland and we don't think he was anywhere near Ontario, Canada West and while his birth date could have been 1858 we think it was around the late 1840s to early 1850s. The Info I have found has given me some 1847's and some 1851's.
Shoot.  I was workin off the wrong death date!  I was looking for 5 Mar 1905.
That's all good the date could be incorrect for his death as it is still unconfirmed but thankyou for trying let me know if you find anything else

Found your grandfather in New South Wales, Australia.  "Find A Grave Index," database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q295-1XBF : 9 July 2020), Edward Huish Cross, 1998; Burial, , ; citing record ID , Find a Grave, http://www.findagrave.com.  This changes everything.  I will have to begin a new twig on the WikiTree.

Here is your grandfather's WikiTree profile.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cross-10579

This looks like one of the family census.  Has a Dalgleish visitor with them:  "England and Wales Census, 1901," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9HT-QJY : 20 May 2019), Thomas Cross in household of Alexander Cross, Lambeth, London, England, United Kingdom; from "1901 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing Norwood subdistrict, PRO RG 13, The National Archives, Kew, Surrey.

"United Kingdom, Militia Service Records, 1806-1915," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KHBM-KZ9 : 10 December 2017), Thomas Cross, ; from "Militia Service Records 1806-1915," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing 3RD SOUTH LANCASHIRE REGIMENT, WO96, WO 96, The National Archives, Kew, Surrey.

"England and Wales Census, 1911," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X7VC-QK5 : 13 September 2019), Thomas Cross, Deccan, India; from "1911 England and Wales census," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing PRO RG 14, The National Archives of the UK, Kew, Surrey.

Maybe where they lived and possible burial sites might be helpful.

Hi I know this is an older question, but somehow I just came across it and it perked an interest, also the Cross family seem to be disconnected in the "One Tree" so I set out to connect them for my connector challenge to myself smiley

"My GGG grandfather - Alexander Cross b. abt 1851 d. 5 Oct 1905"
see: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cross-11637 - the original Alexander Cross which I have disconnected was born and died in America, very similar birth/death dates but not quite the same which I think was throwing the links out .. anyway

initially James Cross (the son) was attached to the "wrong" Alexander, however I think I've managed to sort that out. James (the son) has at least 8 other siblings
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GZFD-N79

"My GGG grandmother - Margaret Lynn (possibly her correct last name) b. abt 1859"

That is her correct last name though it's mostly spelled Linn, she has been somewhat easier to trace, Her father is from Ireland, his name is James Linn born about 1820 in Ireland, her mother is Janet Reid born about 1821 in Ayrshire Scotland

"My GGGG grandfather - (Unknown first name) Cross. this is where it goes wrong I know nothing about this man and can't find him anywhere"

His name was John, and sadly that's all I've been able to find out about him.. he did father 2 children with Janet Stark allegedly. in 1905 Alexander Cross (Arbuckle) age 57 made a Poor Law application. on that it stated he was the illegimate son of John and Janet so I don't know if John Cross and Janet Stark ever did marry? Or what happened to John, i.e. did he die or abscond LOL

"My GGGG grandmother - (Most likely) Janet Stark b. abt 1827. She also married and had children with Thomas Arbuckle b. abt 1826. She also married a man with the last name Stark."

Yes it's Janet Stark - I think perhaps that bearing in  mind the illegitimacy of John Crosses first 2 children that perhaps this 3rd child was also illegitimate and could be a "Cross" but named Stark if father had already disappeared?

I have been unable to find out anything more about your John Cross there was quite a community of Coal Miners named Cross in Lanarkshire at that time and quite a few Johns so it would be guesswork to try to attach one of them, though beating in mind that this family seemed to stick quite heavily to Scottish naming traditions his father could be an Alexander

Janet Stark went onto marry and have more children with Thomas Arbuckle and while he doesn't seem to have adopted the "Cross/Stark" children officially it seems he was the father to them, Alexander Cross named one of his children "Thomas Arbuckle Cross"

hope that helps
