Which Twentieth Century Artist are you most closely connected to?

+15 votes

This week we're featuring artists of the twentieth century, like Frida Kahlo, in the Connection Finder.

Featured alongside her are other artists from the era:

Who are you most closely connected to? If you're one of the 22,678,000 of us who are connected to each other on our big tree you can check with the Connection Finder.

You can check for shared ancestors with the Relationship Finder. Are you a cousin to any of them? Your Relationship Finder Quick Links page (see your profile pull-down menu under "Relationships") has quick links for several notable groups.

Let us know below! If you want to share your connection on social media with cousins and friends, click the "get shareable image" below the results, e.g. Frida Kahlo and Georgia O'Keeffe. Then just upload it along with the URL of your direct connection. (Please refrain from sharing your connection on the featured profiles, though. It clutters conversations on research and collaboration. Thanks!)

P.S. Help us choose and improve profiles for next week's feature: Voice Actors!

I am most closely connected (20 deg.) to Marc Chagall. I was a top student in French, and attribute that to connections such as this one (which, I know, is invalid.)

As a current Contemporary Artist myself, I am thrilled to be only 22 degrees away from Pablo Picasso.

Thanks for the question!!

I'm closest connected to Marc Chagall at 17 degrees. The only one with a detectable biological relationship to me(assuming everything's accurate with no NPEs etc) is Georgia O'Keeffe, my 7th Cousin, 4x Removed

While Georgia O'Keefe is the closest connection at 21 degrees, Lucy May Stanton (May 1875 - March 1931), American painter, is my Great-Aunt.  A painter of portraits (Joel Chandler Harris), landscapes, and still life, she was best known for her miniature portraits. Her works are in the collections of the US House of  Representatives, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Georgia Museum of Art, Emory University, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the National Portrait Gallery.

I'm 19 degrees from Pablo Picasso, and Georgia O'Keeffe is my 8th cousin 1x removed!
by Amy Golder-Cooper G2G6 (9.5k points)

Hmm... I am also 18 degrees from Georgia O'Keeffe, who is also my 8th cousin once removed! And I see that Amy Golder-Cooper and I are 9th cousins once removed. smiley

(I am 18 degrees from Pablo Picasso, who is not a blood relative.)

I am a 21st century artist; closest by 21 degrees to Georgia O’Keefe. Though not genetically related and  I doubt I’ll ever have such renown. More importantly, I do love painting and I encourage all you artists/arts supporters to keep your hearts in it for the simple joy beauty brings.

I thought that "22 degrees from Pablo Picasso" would be the winner until I found "19 degrees from George O/Keeffe."

33 degrees from Frida Kahlo.

40 degrees from Marie Silvester Adriessen.

17 degrees from Ruth Asawa. FF makes me out to be 10th cousins with her son, Adam Lanier. MRCA John Madison (abt 1625 - bef 1682). Still, this is a line I find somewhat questionable.

23 degrees from Marc Chagall.

20 degrees from Meta Fuller.

21 degrees from Barbara Hepworth.

27 degrees from Sigrid Grunewald.

23 degrees from Henri Matisse.

20 degrees from Georgia O'Keeffe. 18th cousin 7 times removed. (Some uncertainty on my end.) MRCA Jean van Avesnes (abt 1247 - 1304).

28 degrees from Ida Outhwaite.

23 degrees from Pablo Picasso.

Of the artists on the list, I am most closely connected to Barbara Hepworth and Georgia O'Keefe, by 17 & 18 degrees. However, my mother was and artist, quite a good painter, but she didn't do it for a living, and wasn't famous. I have a first cousin who is a graphic artist, and has done work for magazines. My father's aunt [[Gardner-9342|Esther Ann (Gardner) Rainville (1911-1998)]] was a painter, and she started the Ann Arbor Street Fair. I, myself, am a potter, but am not famous.

Georgia O'Keefe is my 7th cousin once removed.  Our MRCA is an early immigrant from the Netherlands to New Amsterdam.

Maybe that's where I got my artistic talent.  Except that I don't seem to have any such talent.  There, I did Doug Laidlaw one better, by making an invalid conjecture which wouldn't even be true if talent and genetics worked that way :).
