US Black Heritage Project's

Connecting Challenge

In order to meet the US Black Heritage's goal of creating 50,000+ new African-American profiles in the year 2021, we have started a connecting challenge. It will be similar to the WikiTree Connect-A-Thon with a few exceptions. Please read our challenge space page for all the rules.

Who can participate? Any WikiTree member who has upgraded from guest and has signed the honor code.

Start/End: This Challenge is a month long. We begin on the first of each month and end at midnight EST on the last day of each month.

A participant sticker will be available to all members who join in for at least one of the months. Special stickers will be awarded to all participants who create at least 25 profiles in a month. A Winner's sticker will be given to the top contributor each month.

To Partipate:

  • Read the rules please!
  • Click on the "answer" button below my name on this post to declare you want to participate.
  • Start with an existing profile and create a family member attached to that profile. Keep adding as many family members up, down, and sideways on the tree as you can. Each new profile is one point.
  • Make sure the research is correct! Use primary documents to find and prove relationships.
  • Add the {{African-American Sticker}} to any profiles of Black Americans who lived in the USA, so the project can keep track of the profiles and honor their heritage.
  • Add at least one good source to every profile.
  • Use the Challenge Tracker to keep track of every new profile you create for this challenge. It will count the total for you automatically. If you discover you forgot to track some, you can list them here to count.
  • Repeat.
  • If you are working on enslaved ancestors, every new slave profile you link to a slave owner using the USBH Project's guidelines, counts as a connected profile. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.

Have questions? Please ask.

Only have time for a few profiles? Please join us! Every contribution gets us closer to our goal.

Do you need some profiles to get you started?

If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, you should have access to the US Black Heritage Connecting Challenge server. If you can't access it, please send me a message.

Thanks for growing our tree!

Our May total: 3726

Our total for 2021: 15,367 (woohoo!)

Just popping in to say, even though I have not signed up for the challenge, I have not forgotten my USBH people.

On the 7th of this month I added Clarence Williams III (of Mod Squad fame), his former wife: Gloria Foster (notable actress), his father: Clarence junior; grandfather Clarence Williams (notable jazz & blues musician, published, whatever-er) - connected his wife (as someone beat me to creating the profile) Irene Gibonns (notable singer/actress).Yesterday/today I added Irene's father: Francis Gibbons, so I could attach her sister: Kitty Gibbons -- all so I could add Katherine Henderson (notable classic blues singer), as she was mentioned in a census as staying with Clarence (senior - the musician), and Irene.

(In between the 7th and yesterday I had been (still am) working on Harpo Marx and extended family.  But they're Jewish, not USBH fodder.)

Thanks Melanie for adding more profiles!

It's something I enjoy doing.  :)

I also added Katherine Henderson's husband and son - John Lewis Jackson III.  Sad story, that one.  He - the son - died (in a cemetery) in an air crash mere moments after takeoff.  He was just 26 years old, and left two small children. He could do with some help regards properly categorising him military-wise -- as I have no idea where to look for / how to find that information.  US military is definitely not my "thing".

I don't mess with military categories or stickers either because I don't work with any military stuff. Usually if I need this added to a profile and it's not something basic I can figure out, I ask for help in g2g.

I'm exciting about adding more profiles this month. We are making amazing progress on our goal!

Don't forget that if you forget to use the tracker for a profile or two, you can list them here to be counted.

I've found that if I forgot when first creating the profile, I can still add them when doing an edit to the profile.

You know I'm in! I need some fresh families to work on, though. My existing clusters just get bigger every day and I can't seem to break through!
by Kate Schmidt G2G6 Pilot (121k points)

All those new profiles will eventually connect together though. It just may take a little while. Thanks for your hard work! smiley

Oooooh, what a great project! I'm mostly working on the Golden 14 and the monthly Black notables, but I might have to dip my toe into that one!
There are lots to do and the help would be most welcomed.

What a great project. Thanks, Pat!smiley

Dear Emma,

I am in for the month of June.

So far I have added four profiles. These are not yet connected.

Isaiah Dorman https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dorman-1524 is notable. I have added the basic Notables sticker to his profile. I don't know more than the basic Notables sticker.

His father George Dorman is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dorman-1523

His son Baptiste Pierre is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pierre-487

The wife of Baptist Pierre is Winyantanka (Lakota) Pierre https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lakota-49

I am adding more from this family hoping to find enough people to connect them.
by Margaret Summitt G2G6 Pilot (319k points)

Thanks, Margaret!smiley

Isaiah Dorman should show as connected tomorrow.  I connected him through the ancestors of his granddaughter's first husband.  That ancestry is Metis and Lakota.

I'm participating.

I will be adding to Carla Hayden.

She is a living Notable. Can her profile now be changed from the Unlisted privacy setting to the new living Notable privacy setting?

by Tommy Buch G2G Astronaut (1.9m points)

Thanks, Tommy! smileyI'll send you a PM about opening Carla Hayden. I need to ask you something about the profile.

Thanks Emma. The WikiTree Team made an excellent decision in opening up these living Notables so that their profiles can be seen. Also, that's a nice picture of Carla that you added.
I forgot to choose the tracker when I added my new connected person, but I edited the profile, then saved the changes and then chose the tracker. I see that the person has been counted.

I'm in!  I hope I have more luck this month than I did with Dorie Miller last month.
by Sarah Heiney G2G6 Mach 5 (53.5k points)

All these awesome profiles are going to eventually connect somebody!smiley

Dorie Miller IS connected now so it did work eventually! Even though it's a long and winding path...

I am so happy that connection was finally made!  I think I ended up adding about a dozen different families each in Lunenburg Co VA and Nottoway Co VA, if those locations ever pop up again when I'm working on connecting someone else I'm definitely jumping on it.

I picked the branch you had found in North Carolina (this being one of my favorite areas to work in) and worked obstinately from there, knowing there were already connected profiles in the area.

The good news is Thelonious Monk being from Rocky Mount NC, one of these profiles might come in handy.

And oh! We need to connect Alfred Cralle!  and he had three sisters-in-law from Lunenburg County, Virginia! They all married the same brother, McNoah Cralle.

Did you happen to connect him yet?  A whole bunch of my profiles were from Browns Store, there's no way those won't match up somewhere!
Nope - so far I've only been tidying up the profiles that need other profiles added. This is the most "local" needing family: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cralle-85

Well, Alfred Cralle is connected now, and a whopping 65 degrees from Graham Hill, LOL... There are probably some hidden shortcuts here and there, though!

Edited to add... he's connected through the Olivers in Nottoway County, who were indeed added by Sarah while expanding the branches of Dorie Miller.

I would like to participate in June.

I plan to add several Notables and try to connect them. I hope this counts. I also plan to add enslaved profiles to my slave owning ancestors. I also hope this counts.
by LG Price G2G6 Mach 4 (46.7k points)

Hi LG. Every new profile you add in a notable's family does count as well as every new enslaved ancestor linked to the slave owner. Thanks!smiley

I will do some more as well. Will be working westward ho/homesteaders and colorado gold rush miners.
by Vickie Miranda G2G6 (7.8k points)

Ooh. That sounds interesting! Thanks for your helpsmiley

When I first wanted to join this group for June, I didn't notice the "Notable" part of the sentence. So I should work on notables in the area I was gonna work or supposed to work on the 10 notables that were listed for month of June?
Hi Vickie, you can work on any profiles you want to, there is no requirement that they be notable. We're just hoping to add as many new profiles to the tree as we can.

Thank you, Shirley!smiley

I have created a profile [[Johns-5995|Vernon Napoleon Johns (1892-1965)]] which I belive qualifies as a notable. What is the process for that? Thanks :)
If you can post here any notables you've created, I'll send a request to have you add the project to the profile to manage or co-manage. Thanks!
