Surname DNA Connections, a definitive explanation please.

This question has been asked before and I've read thru the replies but I still have a basic question. Are the 5000 odd Glover's in my Surname list actually genetically linked to me? Is this also true for my other family names surnames?

If I understand correctly, when I ,and a collateral cousin link to a common ancestor then it becomes a DNA Match.

Without regard to DNA, wondering if all those with the surname Glover are related seems like the assumption is that there was only one original Glover.

It seems to me (with no scholarly background in names) that many names (Smith, Johnson, Adams) had more than one origin. I assume that would be true of names in other languages.

Also, consider immigration name changes, spelling differences, matrilineal naming.

"With out regard to DNA......." no comment required wink

Actually my question was more about understanding how WikiTree works. What I was wondering is - what is this list? - is that all of the Glover DNA surnames or just a selection for me based on my DNA - perhaps others see a different list....

The DNA surname lists are not specific to you. Anyone searching for Glover would see the same list. It is a list of people with the surname Glover who have a DNA test taker listed on their profile. That test taker will be connected to that profile within 8 degrees.

This leads to another question. Are you linked to your 5000 odd Glovers' through yDNA? In one or more cases, given Not Parent Expected events (NPEs), this might not be the case. In such instances, you might be related through an autosomal line. It is also possible that some of your DNA matches, on the short cM (centiMorgan) end of the matter, are false positives (i.e. not really matches at all). Those that you can match on the basis of trees that align with your own (shared ancestry), well, sure, barring any serious error, and, of course, those crop up every now and then, too.

Wikitree does not store any DNA data, just who took a test and what test they took, so there is no way to know here whether anyone is connected to you by DNA.  Wikitree is suggesting that folks with your name, or people descended from what your trees show as common ancestors, may share DNA, but to find out you have to go to a site like Gedmatch and compare your actual DNA.

Slight exception, relationships that are "confirmed by DNA" have a statement showing that two or more people do share DNA based on a comparison made elsewhere.

"Confirmed by DNA" refers to the parents of the person's profile on which the statement appears (as required).  The statement should include a discussion of the matches used to support the confirmation, but they may or may not be WT members so their names may not appear in the discussion or in the profile's listing of DNA connections. (I know you know that, Kathie.  I'm just trying to clarify for other readers.)

Because you documented your Y-DNA test information on your profile smiley, all profiles of males who are patrilineally connected to you in WikiTree will show information about your DNA test (unless they are indicated as nonbiological connections).

The DNA information will not appear on the profiles of other people named Glover whose profiles are not patrilineally connected to yours.

This is the correct answer! The only reason YDNA would connect to a WT profile is that it is connected per research, hopefully well documented lines.
The question is about the Glover DNA connections list https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:DNATests&s=Glover
