This is how it is......correct me if I'm wrong! Cousin James Brooks' backwoods Alabama steam powered computer is out of coal......you'd think he had enough coal in Wales......so he sent, by telegraph, a photo of his birth mother, Ruth Brooks, on strike, in 1948, at Ma Bell in New Orleans and Kathy brought out her trusty 'Kodak' and snapped a copy so we could 'jury rig' it into the 52_Weeks_of_Photos_Profession and start James on his journey.......isn't WikiTree fun with all the help getting us this far......over to you James......laugh

I spent last week trying to find the picture of my mother-in-law, also on strike from the telephone company in Louisiana, though I don't know if it was that same year. If I ever find it, I'll post it here.
Special thanks to cousins John and Kathy for all the help, I didn't find my mother till 2019, and with the help of all you Wikitreers I found the rest of my maternal family including my maternal 12 years younger half brother who shared this an album of mom's life from high school graduation (1946) till 2002 when she past. I think this one really shows her spirit.

Thanks again John and Kathy and all of Wikitree.
Hi Joyce, as best I can find in researching the strike, it was the first one, and it was in 1948m in New Orleans.

Hope it helps, if you look up Southern Bell strike New Orleans 1948 you should get close.

It might have been 1947.

Thankyou, James, for awarding a STAR to the answer.....Kathy will be pleased, when I tell her, that her efforts to get the photo(s) onto the profiles, that I can work with, make it possible to post.....and, to all those who helped me on my way, A BIG THANKYOU, you are not forgotten.wink PS  I, also, just posted the photo to the free-space gallery, as I believe it is a necessary step to have a star.

This is a tintype photo of my great grandmother Clara McIntire taken between the years 1875-1882. She was a school teacher in New Salem, Pike Co., Illinois at the time this photo was taken. I am fortunate to have her autograph book that she had her students write in, and this is from one of her students.

Thank you Robin for your sweet comment.
Thank you Joyce for your nice comment.

Thank you for the response, Alexis. There is nothing like genealogy to show how small the world really is!

As for winning last week, wow, I'm such a newbie here that I didn't even know there was a winner! But thank you for the congratulations.

I can say as a teacher that it's so lovely and meaningful when a student writes a note of thanks.  But I don't think I've ever received a poem of thanks!  What a sweet message from your great-grandmother's student and a striking photo of her as well.
Thank you Betsy for your wonderful comment.
Alexis......This past week my mind remembered the students my mother helped and on to the teachers that guided me......the poem from Clara's autograph book gives an indication of what Clara meant to her students.....it is sad to know that she left this world much too early.
John, thank you for your always great comment… I wanted to share was that I found the student. I had given up finding her, because I thought the first letter of her name started with an S. Also her father is my second great uncle, and her mother is my second great aunt from my McCleery family. Genealogy is so much fun!                       [[Pine-778|Lucetta (Pine) McCoy (1864-1901)]]

Alexis, It's interesting that you mention mistaking an S for an L as I, on 2 occasions, struggled with an S and N in both directions.....now I'm wiser in translating handwriting.blush

Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo of your great grandmother my sweet friend, she is adorable
Thank you Susan, my sweet friend, for your comment.

This is a photo from the early 1930s and shows my wife's paternal grandfather [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Petersen-4540 Gustav Ernst Petersen] as a young farmhand on the Stolten farm in Heiderfeld, Leezen Municipality, Segeberg County, Province of Schleswig-Holstein, Free State of Prussia, German Empire.

On this farm he worked as farmhand until the second World War and when he returned from Russian captivity in 1950 until his retirement in 1976.

Dorothy Mary Hutchen's Wedding. This is a photo of my husband's mother Dorothy Mary Hutchen taken in 1935 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. Before she married she was a piano teacher but middle class women were often expected to give up their careers after marriage and that is what happened to her. Music was very important to her all her life and she passed that love on to my husband, we still have her 'boudoir grand' piano.

by Gillian Loake G2G6 Mach 5 (59.0k points)
Gillian, thank you for sharing such a fabulous photo of your husband's mother. She is certainly beautiful. My grandmother and great grandmother also quit teaching school when they married--thank you for your good explanation.
Gillian, I have been to Kettering, Northants! My ex’s family is from there. Small world!

BEAUTIFUL photo!
Thank you for your kind comments Alexis.
Thank you Missy, it really is a small world, we still live very near Kettering.
I would ask where, because I might know where it is or have been there too. However, I understand if you do not want to say due to privacy reasons. My ex mother in-law lives in Burton Latimer.
We live in Burton Latimer too, my husband's parents moved here at the time of their marriage in 1935.
Oh my goodness, small world! My ex in laws (my fil died in 2003) have been there since the 1960s! Btw- I love the dine-in Chinese food place in Burton, but I can not remember the name!

G Grandfather, John Hogan, was a firefighter with the Boston Fire Department from 1892 until his retirement in 1936.  He was awarded a Medal for Gallantry while  horseman attached to Engine #4  in 1897, and the Distinguished Service/Special Service Award in 1904.  He retired with the rank of Lieutenant and spent his retirement doting on his grandchildren and regaling them with stories of his days in the Royal Navy (Lost at sea in a typhoon!  Shipwrecked off the coast of China!) and his distinguished career as a firefighter.

Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia

I served twenty years in the United States Air Force as a Command and Control Specialist, Program Manager and Scientist. This picture was taken in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia during my Command and Control days with the 4404th Wing (Provisional), supporting Operation Southern Watch in 1994. The building in the background is infamous Building 131, which looked a whole lot different in 1996.

Thank you, Missy. I had to retire at 20 years for medical reasons, otherwise, I would still be in today.

This photo is of my husband's father, Andrew Shaules. He was a professional organist in the San Diego, California area during the early 1950s, playing and singing in local Night Clubs and restaurants. He also played at the local skating rink in Belmont Park, an amusement park in San Diego.

Andy had been performing publicly from the time he was in the 8th grade and was also the choir director for local Catholic churches while still a teen.

by Robin Shaules G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Thank you Robin for sharing the wonderful photo of your talented father-in-law. He looks like he is really enjoyed playing and singing.
Thanks Alexis, as always! The entire family is musically talented, but he most of all. Most of them play and sing... and I just listen and clap for them. I wasn't blessed with that talent, but I appreciate it.

A distant cousin (still in Sweden) found me here on WikiTree. (My 3rd great grandfather and her great grandmother were siblings!) smiley She shared with me a photo of her father, Sven Mauritz Benjaminsson. Her father worked at a Konsum since he was 16. I love this photo of him at this beautiful cash register (that did not add).

Unfortunately the photo is of poor quality. The photo will be taken around 1918 in Nassereith and shows my great-grandfather Josef Matura as a soldier.

by Michaela Maturová G2G1 (1.3k points)
Michaela,  It took some looking to find Josef, to get an idea of the size of cannon.....now I can easily see him.....very interesting.

Yes, it takes a while to find Josef there :).

The Cannon is probably called Cannone da 254/40 A (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EOC_10_inch_40_caliber).The average tall man was about the size of a cannon wheel .

This is a photo of my mother, Florence McClain (left) and a classmate, Reta Rowley, at what was then called "nurses training" at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon, about 1930. At this time in the US, education of nurses was done by hospitals. The hospitals got a lot of inexpensive labor out of the deal, while the student nurses got a lot of real-world experience. It was a three-year program to turn a high school graduate into a registered nurse. At least at this hospital, student nurses wore capes when outside, befitting the status of nurses as superheros. ;-)

My mother worked as a nurse at Albany General Hospital in Albany, Oregon after she completed her training. She continued after she married my father (a wife working outside the home was unusual at that time) until their first child was born. She returned to nursing again after the last of their seven children reached middle school age, and continued until she retired.

Captain Hiram C Page. Probably aboard the Steamer Peerless which sailed the Great Lakes from Chicago to Duluth (though he was the captain of several others over a period of about 25-30 years). He started as a cabin boy at age 14 about 1854 and progressed up through the ranks. I have copies of several newspaper articles, telling of both his misadventures (shipwrecks, etc) and his strong character. He was well known at the time.

Here is my maternal grandmother Margaret Evelyn Redwood.  She was born and raised in Brislington outside of Bristol.  She did her nursing training in England before coming to New York in the 1920s.  I believe that this photo dates from her nursing days in England.  She was "Babs" to the family and "Red" to her friends at the hospital--whether it was her auburn hair or her surname that inspired this nickname, I don't know.  She met my grandfather, a doctor, through the hospital and the rest is family history!

by Betsy Ko G2G6 Pilot (136k points)
Thank you, Betsy, for the lovely photo and the lovely story. Do you know if the little person was a patient or a family member? They both look happy.
Betsy, thank you for sharing the photo of your grandmother. She is a very attractive young woman, and the way she is holding hands with the child in very sweet.
Hi Robin--My mom has always said that the little boy was a patient.  However, this child looks like a Redwood boy to me based on other photos I've seen.  Maybe it was a nephew?  This remains to be proven.  Thanks for your comment!

My grandma Marie Sykora Williamson was the reason I became a nurse. She graduated in 1930 from the Cleveland Hospital nurse’s training. This photo would have been taken somewhere around that time.

Thank you for sharing this lovely photo of your grandmother, Lori. My mother graduated from nurse's training in Portland, OR just the year after your grandmother. I'm fascinated with your grandmother's uniform. My mother's uniform was quite plain by comparison.

Lori,  I was noticing the photos of nurses, in uniform, this week when I realized that I can't remember when I've last seen a nurse in uniform. I, however, noticed your grandma came from New Jersey and looked up the location.....26 miles from Hackettstown, where my only known American ancestors, my maternal Hackett branch, originated in the 1700s.  Thanks to you and your grandma, I Iooked further, on somebody else's Ancestry tree, and discovered a researched documentation, of 158 pages, on the Hacketts.  Thanks again for posting the attractive photo of your grandmother. smiley

I don't have a photo of my distant cousin.  But I do have a photo of a newspaper article.  The article was published in 1947.

The article is about the "profession" of Claude S Mumma (1894-1977).  He was a research Doctor in the military.  He is credited with the development a surgical technique to aid soldiers who came home from WWII with hearing issues.

The family gossip is that his technique helped many, many people with hearing loss.  After the process was made available to the non-military, general public the number of people helped grew geometrically.

The process has been enhanced with new technology over the years.  However, the basic concept is still the underlying procedure today.

This says 'Profession' and the WikiTree homepage says 'Professional' so I'm giving you this - a photo sent to my step great-grandfather Ted Neal from his family when he a being held as POW by the Nazis. It was professionally taken and although it's lacking that image quality now (it has been halfway around Europe and back) at the time it must have looked great.

I note that "Mother" on the right, Maria Elizabeth Spruce, is looking very fancy with her button coat and hat. Also, one does have to wonder what was going on to the left of them since a couple of them aren't looking at the camera.

My Grandmother used to say she taught all the grades, in elementary school at least. This picture is her in 1923 with her fourth grade class at Anderson Street Elementary School in Bristol, Tennessee.

by Emily Holmberg G2G6 Pilot (153k points)
Emily,  My mother used to mention her elementary school classes of 32 or more pupils.........your grandmother appears to have more!!
There are quite a few students, but I think there are two teachers in this picture. My Grandmother is sitting down on the right hand side back row and I believe there's another teacher standing up behind everyone on the left.
