Why does changing my email address cancel my tree?

It doesn't.  All your ancestors that were on WT are still there.  You may need to contact WT Admin to get your account straightened out and reconnected to your family.

Thanks for your prompt reply to my question. However, I am a bit confused and hesitant to change my email address because of the warning if one does so. I will no longer be using this email soon and need therefore, to change it here in the tree. So confusing this website is at times; even for an old computer guru like me.

You still have a profile and a full tree under the Tree and Tools tab.  If you want to change your address, you should be able the open the Edit screen of your profile and just type your new address into the appropriate field.  Just be careful not to leave the field blank and save -- that will close your account and make the software think you died!
