Do you have Welsh family members whose last name was Hews? They later changed it to Hughes.

My grandfather was Jasper N. Hughes, born 1883 in Ohio.  His father was James Hews, born 1859 in Ohio.  His father was Joseph Prier Hews born 1815 in Ohio.  His father was Walter Hews, Sr. born about 1784 in Pennsylvania.  Some information shows that they were Welsh.  I have not been able to trace the family further than Pennsylvania.

I do not personally, but if there is a welsh connection (which with the high number of Wales > Pennsylvania migrations) a possible spelling change from Hewes is a possibility you might want to look at. There are records for Hews in Wales so its possible you might be able to make a clean connection also.

I am completely stuck in a seperate project right now, but if you have any hints anywhere in your "information shows that they were Welsh"... I wouldn't mind taking a look this end and see if I can help at all when I get finished.

I have Elizabeth Hewes in my tree (b1707) along with her siblings, not sure when it was changed to Hughes but her father is listed as Hughes, half her siblings are either Hughes or Hewes.
