New member introducing myself

I am a new member researching my Carter family. My 2nd GGF is Thomas Lindley Carter born on Jan 23, 1810, in VA. He died on Oct 30, 1881, in Perry Co., TN. Hints on Ancestry indicate he is the son of Charles Cooke Carter (1790-1840) who was the son of Capt. John Champe Carter. The only hint I have for his wife is Jane Paine born in 1795. I can find no documents to support this. Does anyone have any documents to support the fact that Charles Cooke or Charles C. Carter is the son of Joh Champe Carter and Apphia Fauntleroy Carter?

Your Dr. Thomas Lindley Carter's wife is well documented.  She has ancestors that established Nantucket, Massachusetts when it was part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and also ancestors, from the Revolutionary War period, who entitle descendants of this family to join the Sons and Daughters of the Revolution.

I took the liberty of adding her profile to WikiTree, as most of her ancestors already exist, and some of them are project protected.  Let me know if you would like for me to stop there, or if you want me to add profiles for her husband and children.  I sourced enough about the children so that creating profiles for them would be an easy task.  Alternatively, you can upload your Ancestry information via a GEDCOM.

Susan's profile is here:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Starbuck-987
I can make you profile manager on WikiTree, if you are interested.
I really appreciate your help. Susan Swain Starbuck was my grandfather's first wife. She was born on July 30, 1820, in Guilford, NC, and passed away on Jan. 15, 1858, at Whitaker's Bluff in Perry County (possibly Wayne County), TN. Her parents were Seth and Ruth Swain Starbuck of Nantucket, MA and I have all of this documented on Ancestry.com along with the information I have for Thomas Lindley Carter and his second wife, Harriett Ann Hettie Humphries, who would actually be my great-great-grandmother. She was the mother of my great-grandfather, Preston Everett Carter.

It's like I've run into a dead-end on finding any records of Thomas Lindley Carter in NC, but I did find a few records in TN. I've been unable to find a marriage record for T L and Harriett, no death records for TL or Susan but it's suspected they are buried in the Carter-Lindley Cemetery above the log house where they lived. Harriet's DC confirms she died in TX.

I have searched everywhere I think there could be a link for Thomas Lindley Carter. There is a Thomas Lindley who died Sept. 14, 1781, in the Battle of Lindley's Mill, Spring Creek, Alamance, NC that I thought might help. Lindley is not a name the Carter family used and I thought maybe a Carter son had married a daughter or granddaughter of Thomas William Lindley, but I've not found that to be true.

I just want to know who the father of Thomas Lindley Carter is but I may never be able to prove it for lack of documentation.

If you have an Ancestry account I would be happy to share my Carter family with you.

Please continue to add the profiles to Thomas Lindley Carter and Harriett Humphries Carter. Maybe you will find something that I haven't found on Ancestry or Family Tree. I'm not sure how to upload my Ancestry info via Gedcom.

Thank you for your interest in helping me.
I see you added a profile for Preston Everett Carter, but without parents. His Find A Grave memorial is found here:  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/181226139/preston-everett-carter  and both of his parents are attached.

I am not sure that you use FamilySearch.org as a research, but Harriett is also found here:  https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LR4R-95C

If you click on the sources tab on FamilySearch.org, you will see that on the 1880 census, Thomas brother-in-law from his first marriage is living in the household with Thomas and Harriett.  Preston is the oldest son at home, age 21.  Even though Thomas is now 76 years old, (Harriett is 42) they have a daughter who is only three years of age.

Gail, have you created a WikiTree profile for Thomas, yet?  His Find A Grave memorial is here:  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/181219722/thomas-lindley-carter

I will be happy to do what I can to assist you.  I have updated the profile for Charles Carter, but cannot find any link to Dr. Thomas Lindley Carter, the postmaster for Whitaker's Bluff.  I did find information about a young lady of that place, whose father died and whose mother move in with a son's family, leaving her in the guardianship of Dr. Carter:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Treadwell-1477

Jane,

Thank you for your comments. I currently have an account on Ancestry.com. I'm still finding my way around WikiTree and haven't used it that much. I have several documents on Thomas Lindley Carter but nothing to prove who his father is.

I imagine you have tried all the usual places.  On and off today, I have come back to my computer with another idea of something unusual to try.

I noticed that the bondsman for the marriage between Thomas L. Carter + Susan S. Starbuck ~ 21 Oct 1839 bond was paid by Uriah Talley.

I was trying to determine whether this Uriah Talley was a relative of Thomas (he was indeed a contemporary).  Uriah was born in 1809, a son of John Talley and Jane Eakes:  https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/KGC4-QD5
