I have information to contribute to the profile of John Bowman Sr. This is what I can add:

  • James-L-Bowman
  • User Home Page Genealogy Report: Descendants of Robert Bowman, Senior
  • https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/b/o/w/James-L-Bowman/GENE2-0003.html
  • JOHN3 BOWMAN (ROBERT2, ROBERT1) was born Abt 1661 in Bermuda Hundred, Henrico Parish, Va. (probably), and died Abt 1725 in Henrico Parish, Virginia. He married SARAH ??? Abt 1685 in Henrico Parish, Virginia.
  • Notes
  •        On November 10, 1679 John Bowman deposed that he was 18 years old. [Weisiger, Henrico County Virginia, Deeds: 1677-1705, p.148] On the 1704 quit rent roll he is listed as John Bowman Jr, possessor of 300 acres [Annie Laurie Wright Smith, The Quit Rents of Virginia, 1704, p. 10]. The appellation of Jr in the quit rent rolls is an indication that his uncle John Sr was still living in 1704.
  •        This John Bowman was given the title of Doctor. Possibly he had some training in herbal medicine. His great grandson William Bowman (1755-1808) also was given the title of Doctor in at least one record in Rutherford County, N.C. Perhaps there was some family tradition of medical practice.
  •        From Colonial Wills of Henrico County, Virginia, Part One, 1654-1737, by B. B. Weisiger, III., on page 108 we learn that John Bowman had land on Swift Creek; on page 168 we find the will of Edward Bowman who speaks of having land on Swift Creek adjoining a tract belonging to his brother John Bowman. This appears to document a kinship link for William Bowman of Rutherford County, N.C. to the Bowmans who had settled earlier in Burke County, N.C.
  • Will of John Bowman of Henrico Parish
  • To son Robert, my plantation at Rocksdale, allowing my wife Sarah all privileges, also to Robert, the tract on Swift Creek that I have already deeded him
  • To my Godson Peter Hudson, 200 acres, being the lower part and adjoining his land called Nut Tree Run
  • To my daughter Sarah Knibb, for life, 150 acres of the aforesaid tract, below Peter Hudson, and after her death, to my grandson, John Knibb
  • To my granddaughter Prudence, a mare filly
  • To my granddaughter Jane, daughter of my son Robert, a yearling heifer
  • To daughter Sarah Knibb, a 15 shilling ring
  • To my son John, items, also to son Robert, items
  • All the rest to wife and she to be executor
  • Dated 3 Dec. 1725
  • Wit:Joseph Royall, Joseph Royall, Jr., James Henry Shorthose
  • Recorded 7 March 1725
  • This document shows a connection to Royall/Ryal family, a name which appears in some Bowman lines as a given name
  •        Children of John Bowman and Sarah ??? are:
  • 8. i. JOHN4 BOWMAN, b. Bef 1705, Henrico Parish, Virginia; d. Bef March 1756, Chesterfield County, Virginia.
  • 9. ii. ROBERT BOWMAN, b. Bef 1705; d. Abt 1745, Amelia County, Virginia.
  • 10. iii. SARAH BOWMAN, b. Bef 1707, henrico Parish, Virginia; d. Bef November 1736, Henrico County, Virginia (?).
  • Colonial Wills of Henrico County, Virginia, Part One, 1654-1737, by B. B. Weisiger, III., on page 108
  • Weisiger, Henrico County Virginia, Deeds: 1677-1705, p.148
  • Annie Laurie Wright Smith, The Quit Rents of Virginia, 1704, p. 10
  • One of these two men, John Bowman Sr or John Bowman Jr is referred to in some surviving Henrico documents as Dr. John Bowman. It is unclear which of the two, uncle or nephew, was given the title or what the title signified.

These are the sources I am using:

  • Colonial Wills of Henrico County, Virginia, Part One, 1654-1737, by B. B. Weisiger, III., on page 108
  • Weisiger, Henrico County Virginia, Deeds: 1677-1705, p.148
  • Annie Laurie Wright Smith, The Quit Rents of Virginia, 1704, p. 10

Should I contact one of the pre-1700 projects or know about any style guidelines before proceeding? Thank you!

Hi, Jim. It looks like any new info with a primary source added to the profile will be a step in the right direction! I believe you might want to differentiate between the information the primary source documents actually verify and that which is still conjecture or perhaps established by a variety of secondary sources (wills of other people, deeds where he may be mentioned, etc.).

And while you are at it, Jim, please move the biography to the biography section instead of after the Sources section. Thanks.
He has cited any sources.
