Hi everyone!

500px-Meet_our_Members_Photos-46.jpgIt's time to meet another one of our Wonderful WikiTreers! This week's member is Jason Grant.

Jason became a Wiki Genealogist in December of 2019. He is active in our Acadia and Native American projects.

What are some of the surnames you are researching?

Some of the surnames I’m researching are Grant, Vienneau, Doucet, Sewell, Peter-Paul.

What are some of the locations you are researching?

I’m mostly interested in L’nu’ Āgade aka (Acadie) Nouvelle France, France and New England.

When and how did you get interested in genealogy and family history?

As a boy, we were raised speaking English, but my mother was French Acadian mixed indigenous. When I got older, I found out that my paternal line was actually Scottish, and this really intrigued me. One of my cousins did extensive research on the Grant Clan and our family and there were strong ties back to Scotland. In 2007, I found out online there was a global Grant DNA project and I thought it would be interesting to see if I could find out more about my paternal side of our family. I wasn’t disappointed. A few months after I submitted my DNA to the project, the secretary for the current Chief of Clan Grant contacted me saying they were notified that my DNA matched with one of the Clan Chiefly lines of the Grant Clan. It was all very interesting, and I was excited.

Who's your favorite ancestor and why?

My 9th Great grandfather - Sachem Madockawando.

As proud as I am and privileged to have an extensive knowledge of our family genealogy my favorite ancestor is Madockawando. Reading the history of Madockawando I’m fascinated with his role in fighting the English, being a major ally with the French and his daughter eventually marrying Vincent D’Abbadie. I married into a Mi’gmaq family at a young age, and I was fortunate to have learned the culture, traditions fakelore and language I was unaware of my Native American ancestry except for the confessions made by my grandfather Arthur Vienneau just before he passed away. I spent all those years immersed in a culture not truly knowing my proud history until much later in life. Though my Native American ancestry is distant, my father-in-law always told me that if you are living this way of life then you are this life. He never believed in blood quantum.

Tell us about a brick wall you were able to break down.

One brick wall I would like to break through is a grandfather in my Grant line. My DNA and family tree brings me to him back through my father, grandfather and so on but when we get to him, we know very little. Some say he could have been an illegitimate son of the Clan Chiefs but that’s just a theory. He was killed in NYC at the end of the Revolutionary war and that’s about all we know.

If you could pick one person in history to be related to, who would it be and why?

It would have to be Chief Red Cloud. He was an intelligent man, soft spoken but always willing to stand up for what is right. I admire all the chiefs of his era, but he is my favourite.

What are some of your interests outside of genealogy?

Some of my interests outside of genealogy are music, gardening and writing. I just finished a historical fiction on Father Sebastien Bernardin, one of the first Récollet priests to come to Nouvelle France to help convert the Mi’gmaq. I’m not particularly interested in religion, but there is an amazing story that had to be told about this man, what he endured and what he became. It’s not what you would think.

My next book will be about my grandfather Madockawando and his life.

How long have you been on WikiTree and what do you spend the most time doing?

I’ve been on WikiTree for little over a year and a half. I’m involved with the Acadian Project, and I was invited to contribute with the Native American Project as well.

What brought you to WikiTree?

I was already a Wikipedia editor and contributor; I think I stumbled upon it accidentally one day as I was doing some research. I was instantly hooked.

What is your favorite thing about WikiTree, or which feature(s) do you like the most?

My absolute favorite thing about WikiTree is the “Relationship to Me” feature.

If you could improve one thing about WikiTree, what would it be?

I don’t like the duplications of accounts, but overall WikiTree is doing a fantastic job in merging accounts. I’ve been guilty when I began creating new accounts instead of looking for existing accounts for a particular person. I know better now and I’m very mindful when adding new people.

What is an example of how WikiTree has helped you with your genealogy or how you’ve helped genealogy with WikiTree?

WikiTree has helped me find so many family members I didn’t know I had, including some project managers I’m related to. I love the relationships and all my cousins I found using WikiTree. I hope that I am able to help as much as I can educate respectfully some Native American knowledge that I have on place names and cultural differences and similarities especially among the Acadians and the Mi’gmaq people.

Any tips for someone just starting out on WikiTree?

I would say, take your time, fill in everything you know about your own family tree closest to you and branch out. Be mindful of existing profiles and add them accordingly. Have fun and don’t be shy to ask for help. There are so many valuable resources available to researchers through WikiTree. There is no such thing as a stupid question when you are learning.

Congratulations being nominated as Wonderful WikiTreer of the week.

You have a very interesting history in your family; Scots, native Americans, Acadians, a real mixture of - how in Germany it is said sometimes - the New World.

Nice profile Jason.  By the way, one of my favourite aspects of WT is also the "Relationship to Me" and "Connection to Me".  And we are 8th cousins 1X removed through the Cathcarts.  We are also 13 degrees apart through the Dows.

It would appear the my granddaughter is descended from Kagijconiac (Marie Jeanne) born June 10, 1599. But I have to question the dates for her father who is reportedly Membertou, Chief of the Mi'kmaq's. Kagijconiac being born when her parents were around 90 years old? I'd love to hear  from someone whose opinion on the possibility that she was a granddaughter, or great granddaughter, or possibly even adopted into the tribe? Fascinating to say the least. According to sources her spouse was Pierre LeJeune, dit Briard.
