Do you have a year or town of birth, or any other details? Where did the ship sail from?Have you seen a copy of the passenger manifest? Did he have a family, or was he alone when he got to the USA? I think you may be assuming that because he set off from England he was English, which isn't always the case. Have you found a USA Census record for him at all? That might give you more clues where to start. Then I'd try the 1871 Census for England. The best of luck!
