Edward III Project: Gateway Ancestors - do you have one? (Round 3)

Gateway Descendants from Edward III
Round 1 Round 2

This is round three of an old G2G question.  Round one is here and two is here.  The idea here is to find new gateway ancestors.  If your ancestor already appears on the list below there is no need post the line.

Below is a list of 17th century new world immigrants with a recognized descent from Edward III, king of England. The list was kindly provided by Douglas Richardson, author of the Royal Ancestry series.  Links to all of them can be found on this page.

This list currently is 70 individuals representing 55 different families. Of the 70 individuals, 32 settled in the Southern Colonies, 27 in the New England Colonies, and 11 were part of the Quaker migration to the Middle Colonies.

Use the Relationship Finder to find if you have a direct connection to Edward III, king of England (Plantagenet-70). Does your gateway ancestor appear below?  If not, we will work to prove or disprove your connection.

Do you have a gateway ancestor from a population group other than American colonial immigrants (e.g. Australian, South African, European, etc.)? Post them here or in a separate G2G post and we will create new categories and new lists to track them. The line must be very well documented.

The List of 17th Century New World Immigrants

I think I finally figured out why I get all of the emails regarding replies to this Gateway posting...my response to your original post (well- part 3 of the original) must've been timed and positioned so that it is being "answered" by replies instead of your post...either way, I find it highly commendable you are still spending time checking the thread, answering requests and offering not only to check for gateway ancestor(s) but to do the work on the necessary profiles for provenance- as opposed to pointing out who you've deduced is the likely candidate and suggesting profiles are more defined.

Numerous emails from this thread have gone directly to my inbox but for some reason I opened this one and your reply lead me to check for a forgotten post that would elicit the reply- but instead of only complimenting everyone's tenacity; I am a bit inspired to offer any assistance with profiles you can think of that need sources or perhaps a better bio etc. I spend a lot of time on here but am not an expert by any means, thus my reply to help anyone looking for certain links or source suggestions to lessen the workload for this very ambitious but somehow achievable goal. I know I would've been overwhelmed a year ago somewhere between ability to complete the work and the fortitude to plow through the onslaught of replies, my own included somewhere, without becoming overwhelmed or distracted). I realize this is a long expression of acknowledgement and gratitude but I want to make sure I properly thank those helping pave the way for me to learn about my biological family and continue to offer to pay it forward; rather than complain about mistakes or time spent on merging profiles etc as I caught myself doing recently and didn't like it.

 Cheers!

Thanks so much for getting back so promptly. Have another direct (confident) connection to Edward making him my 19th Great Grandfather through my paternal Grandmother Sue Howard. It goes through the Ralph Neville Neville-144 line via his daughter Cecilia, Neville-1904.... her G-G Grandson Stephen, Terry-637 being the Gateway ancestor of my Grandmother Sue Howard, Howard-22533. Amazing dedication on your part working on this project!! Much appreciated. Margaret Mc Nutt-944
@ Becky - you didn't ask, but...

If you find that you'd rather not receive e-mail about a G2G post that you answered or commented on, you can "opt out" by editing your post(s) to the G2G question and unchecking the box "Email me... if a comment is added after mine".
Hi Liz- I apologize as I was exhausted and often don't realize how much I've written because phone screens are so much smaller than other devices...but everything was written with comete respect and total honesty...just used the emails as my gateway (no pun intended?)for sending the message out there.

    Happy Monday!

        Becky Elizabeth

 P. S. - Thanks for the info though as I will use it for something but I like seeing some of the connections and being reminded to work on certain lines here :)
Hi Joe, have you already looked at Elizabeth Green(e) ?

Compare:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Roundy-190
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bennett-6674
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Greene-2278

This may be an error in my research. Something is fishy.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Would 11. Elizabeth (Cooke) Walton not be a gateway ancestor to Edward III? Here's the line:

1. C is the daughter of John Henry Donaldson (1904-1980) [confident]

2. John is the son of Edith Mae (Kendall) Donaldson (1880-1963) [confident]

3. Edith is the daughter of George Andrew Kendall (1856-1919) [confident]

4. George is the son of John Kendall (abt.1834-1859) [confident]

5. John is the son of Caleb Kendall (abt.1793-1865) [confident]

6. Caleb is the son of William Kendall (1750-1798) [confident]

7. William is the son of Hannah (Hasey) Kendall (1716-1761) [confident]

8. Hannah is the daughter of Mary Walton (bef.1684-) [confident]

9. Mary is the daughter of Samuel Walton (1639-1717) [confident]

10. Samuel is the son of Elizabeth (Cooke) Walton (abt.1602-1682) [confident]

11. Elizabeth is the daughter of Martha (White) Moore (abt.1575-aft.1648) [confident]

12. Martha is the daughter of Isabel (Bawle) White (abt.1552-1601) [unknown confidence]

13. Isabel is the daughter of Alice (Weston) Bawle (abt.1520-aft.1578) [confident]

14. Alice is the daughter of Cecilia (Neville) Weston (abt.1491-1573) [confident]

15. Cecilia is the daughter of Ralph Neville (abt.1475-1497) [confident]

16. Ralph is the son of Ralph Neville KB (abt.1456-1499) [confident]

17. Ralph is the son of Anne (Holland) Douglas (abt.1430-1486) [confident]

18. Anne is the daughter of John (Holland) de Holland (abt.1395-1447) [confident]

21. John is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England (1312-1377) [confident]

This is my favorite line and has been discussed many times. The problem has been Cecilia Neville has not been accepted as the daughter of Ralph Neville, Lord Neville by Douglas Richardson and other very  knowledgeable people on SGM. I am now past this and think the evidence is overwhelming in favor of supporting the idea that she in fact the daughter of Lord Neville.

You can read my notes on her parentage here: Notes on Cecilia Weston

Shawn Potter recently published a book on just this one question:

  • Potter, Shawn and Lois Potter. Weston Pedigree Reconsidered: A Review of Documentation Provided by the College of Arm. (2022). Available at Amazon.com.
I will be adding Elizabeth Cooke and the several other descendants of Cecilia Neville to the list as confirmed.
Thanks Joe!
My gateway relative is Stewart-9827, Finley Stewart

Phil I converted your comment to an answer with the line. Finley Stewart is not an accepted gateway ancestor though I cannot disprove it easily.  It will take some work and access to sources not easily obtained.

The ancestry of #17 Alice (Neville) Tunstall is uncertain and is probably not Archbishop George Neville. However, most every possibilty is also an Ed. III descendant.

This is a very interesting case which I think is correct but is not accepted by the powers that be in medieval genealogy.

The question is at generation 16, did John Weston really marry a daughter of the Earl of Westmorland.

I see that some of this is already noted on Cecilia Neville's profile.

Thanks for the background.

Although Anne Weston may not be an official Edward III descendant, is she not a gateway ancestor, given that she had children born in the Virginia colony?

Which project would that fall under?

Every immigrant ancestor could be defined as a gateway ancestor. The glossary for the Magna Carta Project distinguishes between lowercase & uppercase, and the project's Gateway Ancestors category includes only those within the scope of the project - those documented by Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry, which Anne's profile cites. But she is not one whose lineage is documented in MCA. (Just checked Royal Ancestry and she's not listed as a Gateway there either.)

While Richardson lists her as a child of Mary Cave & Jerome Weston, he does not name any of her children & the documented trail continues through her sister Mary. Lookingat the attached profiles for Anne's children, only one shows born in Virginia - when Anne would have been close to 50 years old. That child is probably not Anne's.

Of the six children shown for Anne, Elizabeth (her fifth) seems to have been the only one not born in England.

It looks like her sixth child, Edward, was born in 1628, so she would have been about 54 if she was born in 1574.

Too much that's iffy here, methinks.

So I have no idea which one is the gateway here - except dad.  It is different interestingly than the direct relationship that comes from connection to me.  I actually believe this one to be one of the highest confidence level.  i have DNA proof to the break.  I have 9 others but like this one the best.

1. Lloyd is the son of Gerald Aubrey Hunt (1929-2018)

2. Gerald is the son of Aubrey de Vere Hunt (1904-1996)

4. George is the son of Emily Foott (1843-1912)
5. Emily is the daughter of Louisa Rogers (abt.1802-1867)
6. Louisa is the daughter of Alexander Rogers (1756-1828)
7. Alexander is the son of Martha Pigott (1730-1781)

8. Martha is the daughter of Emmanuel Pigott MP (aft.1684-1762)
9. Emmanuel is the son of Thomas Pigott (abt.1650-)
10. Thomas is the son of Alexander Pigott (abt.1618-abt.1680)
11. Alexander is the son of Martha (Colclough) Pigott (abt.1598-aft.1655)
12. Martha is the daughter of Martha (Loftus) Colclough (abt.1575-1609)
13. Martha is the daughter of Adam Loftus (abt.1533-abt.1605)

This makes Edward the 18th great grandfather of Lloyd.

I'm not saying it's wrong necessarily, but none of the sources currently on WikiTree confirm that Alice Sutton (or Dudley) married Edward Loftus, and was the mother of Adam Loftus.  So that connection needs more research.
Hi John

You can go ahead and decouple them.  I backtracked through the sources at various points and found that they actually came to this entry.

I have several other ways there anyways and thought this one novel as I hadn't seen it before.

11. Dorothy is the daughter of Philip Stapleton (abt.1576-bef.1619)
12. Philip is the son of Katherine (Constable) Stapleton (abt.1553-abt.1580)

17. Anne is the daughter of Richard (York) of York (1411-1460) [confident]
18. Richard is the son of Richard (York) of York (1376-1415)
19. Richard is the son of Edmund (Plantagenet) of Langley KG (1341-1402)
20. Edmund is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England (1312-1377)

Actually, Philip Nelson is already on the list of recognized gateway ancestors to Edward III.

The potential gateway ancestor here would be Isaac Jackson, but it’s not clear whether he had arrived in America before 1700.

Beth - that "uncertain" would throw it out of the running (the relationship between McCausland-260 and McCausland-5 is marked as Uncertain). The biography for https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McCausland-260 doesn't mention children, or sources, or much of anything -

Oliver McCausland was born in 1715, the son of John McCausland by his wife Amy Jane Norris . He is the son of John McCausland.

However, the image of the abstract of the deed appears to name Oliver among his children: https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/McCausland-Photos-260

Was "Uncertain" selected by accident?

Thank you, Liz!  As always, the tree is a work in progress. I will work on updating it.

Beth - I'm fair certain about the trail from Elnor Johnes to Edward III. Looking from her son Thomas to Philip Hopkins, not so much. For example, Thomas-1281 has a note followed by "This line of descent should be used, therefore, with great caution." His son who immigrated - Evan - seems fairly well documented. I'm thinking the note meant Thomas-1281's ancestral line.

Thank you, Liz!!! I am not sure about the lineage, either. I appreciate you taking a look at it.

John - Frances is already listed as a Gateway (Frances, Jane & Katherine Deighton). I think that Joe is looking for new Gateways.
Has she been approved? It looks like she is still a work in progress: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Magna_Carta_Team_Base_Camp#Magna_Carta_Trails_Underway
Richardson (although not infallible) has documented her trail to one or more surety barons. The trails for her/her sisters that need to be developed in WikiTree are listed on her mother's profile - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bassett-755#Magna_Carta_Trails (the "Richardson-documented" ones). But I was referring to the list Joe has in this G2G question, which lists her/her sisters also.
Oh, I see. Somehow I missed her when I scanned the list.

Thanks for the clarification, though, I didn't know about the Richardson documentation.

So many lines to test out....Amusing that all are intertwined in some way, cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents. Please let me know of any stumbling blocks. Thanks

Hi Stephanie
For this exercise, we are looking for a direct ancestral relationship between you and Edward III.  In the above, you have James Leslie brother of Norman Leslie as one step and as already mentioned, James Leslie is not the son of Margaret Crichton.

When I have a look at the Relationship Finder between you and Edward III (Plantagenet-70), there are 13 different ways you connect, and following is the first one, though there is no guarantee that any of them will prove to be well documented.

1. Stephanie is the daughter of [private father]
2. [Private] is the son of Nora Margaret (Rogers) Beamish (1915-1995)
3. Nora is the daughter of Percy Robert Rogers (1872-1934)
4. Percy is the son of Robert Zacheus Rogers (1842-1911)
5. Robert is the son of James G. Rogers (1805-abt.1874)
6. James is the son of David McGregor Rogers (1772-1824)
7. David is the son of Margaret (McGregor) Rogers (abt.1745-1793)
8. Margaret is the daughter of David McGregor (1710-1777)
9. David is the son of Maryanne Ann (Cargill) Clark (1684-1736)
10. Maryanne is the daughter of David Cargill (1661-1734)
11. David is the son of John Cargill (abt.1620-1683)
12. John is the son of Jeane (Gray) Cargill (abt.1594-abt.1652)
13. Jeane is the daughter of Lydia Ann Gray (1578-1635)
14. Lydia is the daughter of Patrick Gray (1555-1611)
15. Patrick is the son of Patrick Gray (1538-abt.1584)
16. Patrick is the son of Patrick (Gray) Gray of Buttergask IVth Lord Gray (abt.1508-1584)
17. Patrick is the son of Gilbert Gray (1480-1541)

18. Gilbert is the son of Elizabeth (Stewart) Stewart Lady Gray (aft.1460-)
19. Elizabeth is the daughter of John (Stewart) Stewart of Balveny First Earl of Atholl (abt.1440-1512)
20. John is the son of Joan (Beaufort) Queen Dowager of Scots (abt.1402-abt.1445)
21. Joan is the daughter of John Beaufort KG (abt.1371-1410)

23. John is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England (1312-1377)

I can see that you have already identified Lydia Ann Gray as a problem.

I used the Relationship Finder for a direct line from Edward III and it told me that I was his 20th great granddaughter. However, I find no common name in your Gateway Ancestor list. Thomas Canby from Thorne,Yorkshire,England was the immigrant ancestor descended from Mary Radcliffe Baker (Bowker) through Robert, James, John, and Alice Dudley Radcliffe to the Cliffords and Nevilles. My name is Barbara McCleary Berman. McCleary-445

According to the relationship finder, this is the link to the first of 9 lines that I have to Edward III.
https://www.wikitree.com/index.phptitle=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1_name=Plantagenet-70&person2_name=Huffman-1031
I have not been able to find a Gateway Ancestor for any lines that I have tried.  Not to Edward III or any other Royal.  I have also been unsuccessful in finding a GA to the Magna Carta Sureties.  Supposedly I am descended from a number of them and quite a few directly.  Also, some of the lines are marked Confident in the Relationship Finder, but I don't have a Gateway Ancestor.  I seem to have many, many ancestors who came to America in the 1600s, but they must not be in these lines and, in the lines I have that go back to Royalty or Magna Carta, the immigrant arrived after 1700.
That is how it looks to me at this point anyway!
There are 9 ways I descend from Edward III in the Relationship Finder.  Some of them go through Robert Irvine.  He could possibly be a GA, but I have not researched this part of my tree and he is not on the list.
Any help with a Gateway Ancestor for Edward III would be appreciated.
by Mary Ann Solbrig G2G1 (1.2k points)
looks like your immigrant ancestor is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Findley-12 - and you're right, he's not on the list.
I've looked several times at the Finlay/Finley/Findley genealogy on WikiTree and most of it is based on a series of unsourced family genealogies, which seem to copy each other and none of them cite any primary sources and have various impossibilities.  Consequently I wouldn't put any faith in a link through that family.

I am trying to add my line and it keeps telling me it is over 12000 characters when it isn't even close to that.  What am I doing wrong?  It is no longer than others I see posted here.
by Mary Ann Solbrig G2G1 (1.2k points)
I have yet to figure out what causes "bloat" in a G2G post, but I'm told that it's links and coding (bold, etc.). Maybe post in two parts?
I had to go back in and delete all the "confident" etc to get mine to fit.

I thought that I had already answered this question, but I do not see that my answer was posted, so I'm posting again. Most of my lines of descent to Edward run through Philip Nelson (Nelson-696) who is already recognized as a gateway ancestor.  However, I found two potential gateway ancestors who are not presently recognized. Both lines incluce a lot of unknown confidences.

Thank you for doing this.

Thomas, son of William Wombwell, is not the same as Thomas Wombwell immigrant to Virginia. Thomas Wombwell, son of William, was Vicar of Wath and was buried unmarried on 28 October 1661. I will be breaking this line here.
Thanks for your work on this! I thought that looked like a pretty dubious line. It's one I have not yet had an opportunity to research.

Not sure whose who on this. Probably will change as you research. It just did. My line to him Changes every time I check. Probably no connection at all.

Francis Wyatt (1583-1644), son of George Wyatt and Lady Jane Finch and a cousin of Hawt Wyatt.  Looks like he immigrated in 1621 to Jamestown.  In the Census of 1624 it says he was the governor of James City.  He married Margaret Sandys in 1618 when he was still living in Boxley, Kent, England.
by Kelly Clarke G2G1 (1.4k points)
Francis Wyatt would count.  I believe he is not on the list because he did not leave American descendants (do you know of any?). The concept of a gateway ancestor is harder for people whose lines are entirely in the UK. I should probably make a special category for them.

[[Gillington-2|Nicholas Gillington (1676-bef.1773)]] would be the Gateway ancestor though he is not on the list.

by Erik Granstrom G2G6 Mach 4 (47.5k points)

Why do we think Nicholas Gillington was the son of John Gillington and Margaret Duckett? I find no contemporary records to suggest this is true.

More research is needed.

There is a sentence I have seen quoted on a couple websites that states:

"Nicholas Girlington who died in Halifax Co. VA in 1773 left a signed paper in Halifax Court records showing a sketch of a wing of the castle. John Girlington and second wife Margaret Duckett were probably the last Girlington residents of Thurland castle."

https://www.thesalmons.org/lynn/family/thurland.html

http://www.shissem.com/Hissem_Merchants_of_Lancaster.html

Though when researching the children of John Girlington (1637 - 1706) it seems like he may have had four daughters as his only children.

From Find a Grave,

"It is possible that Margaret Duckett gave birth to Nicholas Girlington out of wedlock, which could account for Nicholas not being identified as heir to John's possessions. This issue may take much more research for resolution."

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/72780987/john-girlington

I have seen that supposed sketch reference too, but that is in no way evidence of English origins. The bigger problem is that John Girlington had no sons in his will, or in the Visitations

John Girlington had four daughters (Magdalen, Katherine, Elizabeth, Margaret). Magdalen married Henry Butler of Rawcliffe Hall and eventually became the sole heiress of her father. Thurland Castle passed from John Girlington to his daughter Magdalen (Girlington) Butler, then to their daughter Catherine (Butler) Markham (the sons being excluded from inheritance because they were recusants). To say that "maybe he was illegitimate" is just hand waving to try and explain away the obvious problem that John Girlington did not have a son Nicholas.

So, we have no real evidence as to the parentage of Nicholas Gillington, and a very good reason to say that he is not.

We also have chronology problem. The children of Nicholas Gillington are poorly dated but all appear to have been born starting in 1715. His wives were born say 1695-1698.  If we accept the birthdate of Nicholas as about (1676), then he married two women a generation younger than himself, didn't start having children until age 39, and continued having children into his mid-50s.  All of this is extremely improbable.

Clearly, Nicholas was born significantly after 1676, and was not the son of John who was born in 1637 and began having children in 1656.
Hi Joe, thanks for the help on this line, I just disconnected the listed parents of Nicholas Gillington and added notes on their pages as well.

could you give me a little hint and advice of which ones please.

Thank you

Right below the list of how you are connected in the Relationship Finder there is an "Explore more" area that lists for you 55 different paths that were found to Edward.

You have a line going through Warham Horsmanden (bef.1628-1691) and he is on the list of known Gateway ancestors.

I see another line going Peter Beverly (1610 - abt. 1650) who is an ancestor of mine too.  We talked about him in the second project posting and he may be an accurate Gateway Ancestor though he needs more research and sources to connect him to his parents.

You have an interesting line here where Margaret (Johnstone) Ker (1661 - 1734) would be the Gateway ancestor, though she is not on the list:

19. Mary is the daughter of James (Stewart) Stewart King James IInd of Scots (1430-aft.1460)

Here is another interesting route through Scotland, Gateway ancestor would be Matthew Irvine Sr. (abt. 1678 - abt. 1755) though he is not on the list.

6. Robert is the son of William Patterson (1753-1841)
7. William is the son of Robert R Patterson (1727-1795)
