Civil War or not? - would you like to add HENRY BOX BROWN ? [closed]

I have searched and do not think he is yet there, but I'd like another pair of eyes to check before creating a profile for this daring escaped slave turned Abolitionist.  I am also very happy to have someone else create the profile if you feel so inspired?

He is in the US Postal Museum (in Washington, DC) as a Civil War exhibit, but I am not sure if he should go under that project here.

(edit: fr. my DC tour guiding notes taken in 2010: also noted "1856, Richmond ->PA")

Thoughts and help appreciated,

His story is great!  I saw a blurb about him on a Museum Secrets show recently.  It was a lithograph of his "unboxing".  Mags
It certiainly is!  Talk about audacity -and discipline.  Upside down for how many hours?

I think that would be a great profile! Maybe we need to add a subprojec? What do you think?

Yes.  Cool -but I am confused (was just about to take a walk when sax  this msg)  -yes, I am all for sub-projects.  But which/what subproject?

Cheers (be back in ~half an hour or so...)

Shira
The US Civil War project does not really have Subprojects but we have resource pages for each state and for other areas of interest so Abolitionists could certainly be one.

The problem with adding non-military to the US Civil War project is that the template is designed to highlight the regiments and their regimental flags and includes the enlistment and muster dates so you wouldn't be able to make the template work for non-military.

We could design a specific template for abolitionists and keep them connected to the project through categories the way we did the Donner Party under Westward Ho!

I think this would be the way to go to include them in the history of the Civil War.

Of course, beginning an African American project is a must do and I will start another thread about that immediately!
Paula,  2 things: (ok, 3...)

1. Please have a look first at A.'s template work, bottom of the page:

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Powell-5629_Template_Testing

and

2.  please see this thread re: Abolitionists and a separate pos. project:

http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/127235/slavery-in-the-uk-help?show=127464#a127464

3.  I've placed some ladies like http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jacobs-3831 Harriet Jacobs and J W Porter http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Porter-7014 under Civil War because

they worked in Contraband Camps or were designated as leaders (by Sherman) during the War, but were civilians rather than military combatants.

How do we handle them vis. the Civil War project?

warm thanks,

Shira
Actually, Paula, I would not list Abolitionists under either the Civil War nor under Black History, because abolitionists were active in the service of all kinds of slaves (indian slave most notably) and well before the Civl War as well as outside of the USA.  I think professor "Box" Brown certainly belongs in the Slavery category.

But what I think would be helpful would be a sub-cat. of Civil War to cover civilians who served, as nurses, spies, workers in the Contraband Camps, and non-military leaders 'requisitioned' if you will, by the military (such as James Ward Porter).

These are people who served in the Civil War, but not as soldiers.

I am still having difficulties with Google blocking add-ons on borrowed computer, so I fear to create this profile (in case it already exists in some variation) .

I would greatly appreciate someone else lending me his/her eyes to verify that professor Box does not yet exist among our venerable denizens of WikiTree, please.

His story would make an exciting adventure movie!

He still needs someone to create his profile (he is well-documented so it will be relatively easy) if it does not already exist.
