Nancy Kerlin Barnett (1793-1831) “Middle of the Road Grave”

+4 votes

Interesting grave see her memorial on FindAGrave. Apparently is buried in the middle of the road. It’s hard to believe the town would put a road over a cemetery?  She has over 400 virtual flowers on her memorial!

Does she have a Wikitree profile or a connection to the main wikitree?

An amazing story and fascinating.

Thank you

I remember reading a few years ago about a few graves (I think it's three) that are on land where a runway at the Atlanta, Georgia airport was built.  The construction was held up in courts for a long time.  The family refused to permit the graves to be moved and a compromise was finally reached where there are grave markers alongside the runway at the point where the graves are located and the family is permitted to visit them whenever they want to.

The grandson wasn’t about to let them pull his granny up out of the ground and relocate her or worse yet pave over her. That took courage. My hats off to that grandson yes

It appears it’s happened a few times in history from what your mentioning. So nice to see agreement and honoring of the dead.

I’m curious if the babbling Brook she found at her peaceful spot is still flowing there? The 19th century was fascinating!

It is not limited to Indian.  There is also a grave in the middle of the road in Hearne, Texas, too.
