Gillian on the beach in Lancashire 1957I have chosen another photograph of me on the beach in Lancashire, England in 1957, this was a taste of things to come as I enjoyed and eventually competed in gymnastics well into my teens. I bet I complained about having the sand washed out of my hair!

That's cute.

Gillian......Eventually......which end did you stand on? laugh

Hilarious! Thanks for sharing this, Gillian.

The photo below is one taken of my brother, John "Jack" Harley Sims (1944-2010).  He is the one seated.  The other person is a friend of Jack's since childhood nicknamed Tippy.

They were preparing to attend a Halloween party of friends and family.  Not sure where they got the wigs and tiedye shirts and striped pants?

I believe the photo was taken when Jack was 60.  So would have been about 2004.

by Bill Sims G2G6 Pilot (126k points)
Bill,  one of our daughters had a medieval wedding in our yard......when renting our costumes I didn't feel right so I chose a wig like Tippy's, the only one to do so.......as the event carried on into evening, the caterer. in a large tent, became more and more 'lubricated' and became 'infatuated' with my wig.......

This is a photo taken about 1937 of my father and his friends having a fun time taking photos of a "Shotgun Wedding". My father is the preacher. The reason this photo is especially funny is that when he enlisted in the US Army he listed his profession as a motion picture actor and movie producer. Actually he was a college student that had a part-time job delivering milk.

by Alexis Nelson G2G6 Pilot (843k points)
"Actor and Producer." Oh, a wise-guy huh? That's funny. Was the couple ever married, or just friends goofing around?
Thank you Bryan for the comment and the great question. Actually the girl is the girlfriend of the tall fellow with the gun, and they could have later married. Yes, a real jokester.
What a magnificent photo Alexis where your dad and friend are taking photos of a shotgun wedding.

It is so sweet and fun at the same time, the man can’t say no can’t he with a gun in his back so wonderful

Thank you my sweet friend for sharing this
Thank you Susan for your sweet comment. My father’s mother spent a great deal of time putting these photos in an album. She would really love them being on these Challenges.
That's a good one, Alexis! Thanks for sharing it. I got quite the chuckle out of it (and out of your father's "profession").
Thank you Lloyd for your great comment. Yes, it is funny since his major acting accomplishment was being a part of a high school musical program.
Alexis,  as our family includes numerous daughters, I've wondered about the need for a shotgun......rather, as a deterrent......no, I guess not......don't divorce son-in-laws and grandchildren.  BTW (first time I've used those initials) my father would have certainly admired your father's sense of humor!
John, thank you for your always wonderful comment. Sounds like our fathers could have been friends. My mother was such a serious person…but she admitted she had been attracted to his sense of humor.   Proof that opposites attract!

Morning Inspection

My father, Ralph Lawson, served in the military twice. He served as a dentist in the Army Medical Dental Corps from 1964-1984, but he first served in the Signal Corps with the German Occupation Forces in 1954-1956. During his time in Germany, he said he started each week by preparing his vehicle for motor pool inspection. When he returned home to Tennessee, he staged this vehicle inspection picture to show his Army buddies he couldn't get the "military life" out of his system.

From left to right: My grandfather, Henry Clay Lawson, and his 1947 Chevrolet pickup and his 1952 Ford; My cousin, Harold and my dad's 1949 Mercury; and my dad's brother, Bruce with his brand new 1955 Ford.

When I read that he'd been a dentist, I thought of him ordering all those cars "open wide!"
Thank you Bryan for a great photo that brings back memories, and we also got a new 1955 Ford. In 1958 my mother loaned it to her girlfriend to take to lunch, and she wrecked it. We were without a car until my mother was able to borrow money. It was a big lesson for a ten year old about loaning cars.
Bryan, every year the swallows reuse the nest in the woodshed.......last Saturday, when in the shed, I let out a chirp and there they were.......a row of heads with their 'hoods' open anxious to be fed.

This photo was taken Christmas under our Christmas tree in Leezen, Kreis Segeberg, Schleswig-Holstein, 1965 and shows me and my three siblings Axel, Uwe and Jutta.

It seems that we had a lot of fun dressed up as native Indians.

by Dieter Lewerenz G2G Astronaut (3.1m points)
Thank you Dieter for sharing such a fun photo of you and your siblings. It looks like you all have your headdresses and buckskins on, and with your tomahawks and peace pipes-- you all are ready for a John Wayne movie.
Dieter what a great photo of you and your siblings at Christmas, I can se you have a wonderful time

Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo my dear friend
Dieter,  when growing up, about the same age, one side of town was a native village.  The local Saturday matinee would quite often have 'Cowboy and Indian' movies and we would play out the same, but cowboy against cowboy.  As we grew up we would play and hang out with the natives, forming friendships lasting to this day.  I, only now, see us as living out a 'Cowboy and Indian' life.......and I wonder......

I've already shown you most of my own pictures that you might find funny. So here's one my friend Salli sent me not long after the quarantine began. She was in the parking lot at Target and noticed a guy without a mask. No problem! He dumped his lunch out of a paper bag, poked two holes in it, put it over his head, and walked into the store. (Had a little trouble seeing where he was going.)

My father took this photo of my cousins, Steve and Doug Best on the beach at Scituate, Mass. Doug on the pole. It always made me smile. 1950s.

by Pat Miller G2G6 Pilot (215k points)
Pat you are so right about smiling when one sees this photo; it would be impossible to not smile. Thank you for a great funny photo.
Thanks for your comment, Alexis.  I can even hear Steve, even though I was too young to remember.  NaNaNaNaNaNa, you're stuck up there!
Pat…That makes it extra funny!!!

Up a pole without a paddle.....no, doesn't sound quite right. smiley

Get a paddle, sure, anything, just get me down.
Thank You Pat for sharing this magnificent funny photo it is amazing
Thank you Susan for your comment. I'm glad it makes others smile too.

The camera caught the moment when Arthur Dengler, my grandfather top left, cracked himself up while the rest of the group reacts, or doesn't.  His mother-in-law, Louise Ruff top right, is starting to smile and make eye contact, while his father-in-law, Michael Ruff, is still maintaining his serious composure.

The funny thing about this photo is what my maternal great-grandmother wrote on the back of this photo of herself.  Cora (Morgan) Martin Balsley

The mice probably died laughing. Thanks for a funny picture.
Love this!
I guess she thought she looked fierce enough to frighten them away! What a wonderful lady!
If I was a mouse I would protect my tail, too.......from those pruning shears!
Did it work?

My dad was the photographer - he loved making funny pics but not many survived. Picture shows my mother (right) and my aunt and uncle posed as the famous "three monkeys" - See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.

by s Davenport G2G6 Mach 6 (65.9k points)
When Great-Aunt Irene was married in 1921, one of her wedding gifts was a paperweight with the three monkeys. One had his hands cupped around his ears, one had a megaphone, and one had binoculars.
That's so funny... I enjoy the post WWI sense of humor.

This is a photo of my stepson, Richard, while on a trip to a zoo in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia with his parents in about 1987.

He thought he was going to be feeding one bird. This was his funny reaction when all of these beautiful birds swooped in for a handout.

by Robin Shaules G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Thank you Robin for the adorable photo of Richard and the beautiful birds—especially the one that just flew in—their wings are fabulous.    Richard is sure a handsome boy!
Thank you, Alexis! I just finished having a Skype chat with him in Tasmania, where he now lives.
What a magnificent photo sweet Robin with the beautiful birds, they have some amazing colour

Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo
Thank you, Susan. I agree, they are beautiful!

Robin,  as I was followed by my grand daughter, out through the garden gate, a commotion caused me to turn and observe a large full colored Bantam rooster, who had been atop the tall gatepost, in a glide path, wings a flappin', behind, you guessed it, who was running, hollerin' and pointing behind her head......the expressions are priceless! surprise

I get the picture, John! Such special moments.

Twins, Cynthia and Alana, age 3 1/2, Halloween 1973.......Raggety Andy and Raggety Ann.......Alana spoofing a cigar.........

by John Thompson G2G6 Pilot (346k points)
What a magnificent couple John they look like the are having fun

Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo

Susan,  6 months previous, we were teaching our daughters to drink with a straw, Cynthia didn't get it, so I blew into the straw's other end.....Alana, watching, got a big smile on her face, upon which her mother humorously remarked, "wipe that smile off your face", which, with a swipe of the hand, she immediately did. indecision  PS  Missed a good photo opportunity!

John, I love this photo. They are sooo cute! The looks on their faces are priceless.

I don't know why there was a mock wedding, or why my mother, Florence McClain, was the bride in it. But it was preserved for posterity in this photo anyway.

The other participants were from the farming community where my mother grew up. The "minister" on the left is a Mrs. Swank (that's all I know about her), holding a mail-order catalog as her "Bible." The "groom" was Waneta Averhoff, who was about 2.5 years younger than my mother. You may note that the bride's bouquet consisted of garden vegetables.

by Lloyd Wright G2G6 Mach 3 (32.6k points)
Lloyd, thank you for sharing such a funny photo of your mother. Once again, she is adorable, and the vegetable bouquet is absolutely funny. The minister and the groom are too good also. Love the way the minister is standing!
Sorry for the slow response. Thank you, Alexis, for your always kind, thoughtful and encouraging comments!

This is a picture from 1949 showing the family dog Boxer unknowingly disrupting a football match. The photographer seems to have gotten very distracted by Boxer's pitch invasion but unfortunately couldn't get a great picture of him...

This is my Grandfather Rudolph Hembd and his buddy Pat Britzius "Horsing Around." My grandfather was a fun-loving guy as one can see from this family photo.

by Melody Parshall G2G2 (2.2k points)
Melody......My wife, also, has family from Billings and Missoula, Montana.......I'll have to discreetly check out the horse's tale.
Discreetly...I grew up in Great Falls and had a bunch of family in Billings. In fact, Grandpa Rudy lived there for a time as a widower, with his daughter, then with his son. He and his wife lived in Missoula for a spell also. I am in Seattle now but take a trip "home" as often as my life (and travel restrictions) allow.

Someone said something funny. L to R: Hildreth Smith, his wife, Marjorie, his sister, Bird S Dawson, and her husband, Arthur Dawson (my grandparents). If I had to guess, my grandfather told dead pan humor and pretended not to realize it was funny. Or, it could have been my mother, Lucille Dawson who told the joke, we'll never know. (She took the photo.)
