                US Black Heritage Project's

Connecting Challenge

In order to meet the US Black Heritage's goal of creating 50,000+ new African-American profiles in the year 2021, we have started a connecting challenge. It will be similar to the WikiTree Connect-A-Thon with a few exceptions. Please read our challenge space page for all the rules.

Who can participate? Any WikiTree member who has upgraded from guest and has signed the honor code.

Start/End: This Challenge is a month long. We begin on the first of each month and end at midnight EST on the last day of each month.

A participant sticker will be available to all members who join in for at least one of the months. Special stickers will be awarded to all participants who create at least 25 profiles in a month. A Winner's sticker will be given to the top contributor each month.

To Partipate:

  • Read the rules please!
  • Click on the "answer" button below my name on this post to declare you want to participate.
  • Start with an existing profile and create a family member attached to that profile. Keep adding as many family members up, down, and sideways on the tree as you can. Each new profile is one point.
  • Make sure the research is correct! Use primary documents to find and prove relationships.
  • Add the {{African-American Sticker}} to any profiles of Black Americans who lived in the USA, so the project can keep track of the profiles and honor their heritage.
  • Add at least one good source to every profile.
  • Use the Challenge Tracker to keep track of every new profile you create for this challenge. It will count the total for you automatically. If you discover you forgot to track some, you can list them here to count.
  • Repeat.
  • If you are working on enslaved ancestors, every new slave profile you link to a slave owner using the USBH Project's guidelines, counts as a connected profile. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.

Have questions? Please ask.

Only have time for a few profiles? Please join us! Every contribution gets us closer to our goal.

Do you need some profiles to get you started?

If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, you should have access to the US Black Heritage Connecting Challenge channel. If you can't access it, please send me a message.

Thanks for growing our tree!

Our July total: 4052

Our total for 2021: 21718 (almost halfway to our goal of 50,000 new profiles!)

I have created a free space page "Some Families in Berkshire County who Weren't White" but now I am so overwhelmed by the intricacies of Projects, and Categories, and Free Space Pages, and Stickers, and Badges, that I don't want to think about it  again any time soon. It would, however, be helpful to someone wanting to connect people to the Tree, because all the people on it are related to each other. Many of them fought in the 54 Massachusetts. Here's the link.

Starting in April, working with my adopted daughter who had recently discovered the identities of her biological parents, I started adding her ancestors to WikiTree.  Her 'Family List' how has 175 names as ancestors with siblings.  Should I go back and add the {{African-American Sticker}} to each of them, (checking first to make sure that the source passes muster)?

Almost all of her ancestors lived in Pittsylvania County, VA  (or Danville City which was later removed from the county).

In June I had the privilege of visiting her father and went with him to a local cemetery to photograph some family tombstones.

I noticed on your notables list Simpson-18215 was born in Pittsylvania County, Muse-954 and Scott-28113 in Danville.  Also on your 'Profiles needed' list, that Motley-880 was born in the county.

I would like to return to my daughter's tree to check and expand the work, and would also be interested in digging into the 4 presumably unrelated profiles listed above.

I have no interest in earning 'badges', but would like to help with the projects.  Let me know what I can do.

Thanks, Charlie

Hi Charlie! I'm glad you found us. If you would be willing to go back and add the {{African-American Sticker}} that would help us keep track of these profiles on WikiTree and connect people more easily. It sounds like you are already working on what this challenge is all about--adding new profiles so we can expand our database. It's currently our number one goal.
Is there an easy way to access the list of profiles with the african-american sticker?
You can use this link for WikiTree+ and click the "Get Profiles" button. The search parameters are already filled in for finding profiles with the sticker. There are currently 37,191 profiles.

Adding Griggs-2989 to your total. The others were tracked under the Wiki-ID Price-17582. I added those to your total

These were already counted on the tracker. You have a total here of 42 profiles listed and that's the same count I have on the spreadsheet, so we match :-)
