This month’s Bio Builders Challenge theme is People who never married.

Thank you for your support.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section:

  • birth date/place
  • names of parents
  • marriage date/place and spouse name N/A
  • names of children, if any
  • death date/place

Biography Section:

  • Written (full) sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
  • As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
  • Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
  • Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
  • List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
  • Some list siblings. (I think this takes up real estate.)
  • Explanatory remarks, if needed (e.g. disputed persons information, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
  • Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you need to own the copyright unless they are in the public domain).
  • Categories.
  • Connection to the Global Tree.
  • All duplicates merged or initiated.
  • Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
  • Historical context as related to the person's life.
  • Sources, Sources, Sources.

You can see some ideas on where to find some of this information on the Biography Builders space page.

Use "comments" below to ask questions.

NOTE: Biography Builders will not show on the tracker. Please add a list to your answer.

Most of my "never married" are supported by family Genealogical books. There were a lot of them back in the old days, since daughters tended to stay unmarried to help care for the "old folks" and some sons stayed unmarried to help with the farm.

I always click the unmarried box when my records indicate that a family member "never married."

I'm working on a few at the last minute. I have a family that lost several children as young adults.

  • Michael Doyle (1854-1875)
  • Mary Ann Doyle (1861-1862). She is buried with her parents and the headstone says that she is one of their children so in this case maybe a gravestone record is enough evidence?
  • Kitty Doyle (1853 - 1878)
  • Ann Doyle (1839 - after 1910)
A day late but I also spruced up bios for the following people: Cecelia Doyle (1875-1948), Annie Doyle (1865 - 1884), and Thomas Doyle (1857 - 1877).

I tend to indicate "never married" and "no children" on my profiles where the person died young. Where there are duplicate names in a family, it better flags the original name holder on the descendant lists since it shows "never married" and "no children" in parens along side their names.

Just about all of the genealogy compilations books, and letters I hold from other family point out who didn't marry, and I try to make sure that is highlighted in the Profile and in the click boxes available. It explains a lot sometimes.

A bit late to the party, but when I saw the Unmarried challenge this profile came to mind, and I spent some time sprucing it up a little.
