Which 1960's Musician are you most closely connected to?

+17 votes

This week we're featuring recording artists of the 1960's in the Connection Finder to mark the release of Respect, the new biopic about Aretha Franklin.

Featured alongside Aretha in the Connection Finder are other musicians:

Who are you most closely connected to? If you're one of the 23,343,000 of us who are connected to each other on our big tree you can check with the Connection Finder.

You can check for shared ancestors with the Relationship Finder. Are you a cousin to any of them? Your Relationship Finder Quick Links page (see your profile pull-down menu under "Relationships") has quick links for several notable groups.

New special feature: Check out how you're connected to other musicians by searching the musicians category and the various subcategories like Famous Musicians of the 20th Century, Singer-Songwriters, and Jazz Musicians using the green MyConnections button in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Let us know how you're related below! If you want to share your connection on social media with cousins and friends, click the "get shareable image" below the results, e.g. Aretha Franklin and Mama Cass. Then just upload it along with the URL of your direct connection. (Please refrain from sharing your connection on the featured profiles themselves, though. It clutters conversations on research and collaboration. Thanks!)

P.S. Help us choose and improve profiles for next week's feature on  Pseudonyms!

I don't check "degrees" but the first time I can recall, I have no familial relationship to anyone on the list!

Same here, those are mostly people whose trees go back far.

My closest connection is 19 degrees from Johnny O'Keefe.

Everyone else ranges from 20 to 45 degrees of connection.

BTW Paul McCartney is just 11 degrees from Princess Diana.

I guess my ancestors weren't musically inclined.  All of them are really distant.

Most closely connected at 21 degrees from Bob Dylan.  No blood relatives in this group.  I think that's the first time that has happened!

Usually means sparse graphs. An opportunity for volunteers!

Is there a way to see how we are related to someone BY BLOOD, not just the distant IN-LAW CONNECTIONS? I got excited seeing I'm related to PAUL MCCARTNEY & ARETHA FRANKLIN! But when i looked, it was thru a distant inlaw connection. That, to me, isnt really "related to".

The Connection finder finds connections through marriages, etc.

The Relationship finder will do the blood relationships.

If you start your search for connection/relationship from a category page like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, there is a button in the upper right corner marked "My Connections."  It will give you two groups:

1.) "Ancestors and Cousins" with the distance measured in "generations."  (for cousins, count both up and down the tree)  In this group, you really are genetically related!

2.) "Connections" with the distance measured in degrees.  This group includes connections by marriage to in-laws, sometimes multiples.  People in this group are referred to as "some kin."
