Hello everyone,

Here are 2 copies of Pierre Guillaume Fransen's marriage certificate:

"Netherlands, Gelderland Province Civil Registration, 1800-1952," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939K-ZRKS-Y?cc=1949343&wc=Q84W-TVG%3A300367301%2C301952201 : 30 June 2014), Nijmegen > Huwelijksbijlagen 1838-1840 > image 3045 of 3365; Rijksarchief de Gelderland, Arnhem (Gelders Archive, Arnhem).

and

https://www.geldersarchief.nl/bronnen/archieven?mizig=236&miadt=37&miaet=54&micode=0207_1093&minr=5164782&miview=ldt

(image 285)

I can't read his occupation, but OpenArch lists it as 'militair'.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Alex Fransen

Hi Alex,

His occupation is "gepasporteerd mineur", a miner (minelayer/sweeper) who has been discharged (with passport) after having completed his National Service. National Service normally lasted 5 years during which one was not allowed to get married without permission of your commander. It was quite common to run to the town hall after receiving your pass. The passport document itself would contain quite a bit of information about one's description, parents, campaigns, wounds, track record (good or bad) etc. Officially you were not really discharged but given indefinite and unpaid leave.

"Nagelmaker" is the surname of Theodorus Nagelmaker, whose profession is "borstelmakersknecht" (=brushmakers servant) and who is witness to the fact that Guillaume is insolvent and therefor not able to pay the legal fees involved with drawing up the documents necessary for a marriage.

And in his National Service XCertificate his occupation is recorded as "kleermaker" (tailor):

"Netherlands, Gelderland Province Civil Registration, 1800-1952," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939K-ZRV5-B?cc=1949343&wc=Q84W-TVG%3A300367301%2C301952201 : 30 June 2014), Nijmegen > Huwelijksbijlagen 1838-1840 > image 3046 of 3365; Rijksarchief de Gelderland, Arnhem (Gelders Archive, Arnhem).

Not being allowed to marry without permission possibly also explains the reason for the recognition of Matthijs (1837) at their marriage.

Thanks to Joop, Remko, and Jan for your help!

Very interesting - I'll look into it a little more, see if I can find more info.

Do you know where I could possibly find a passport record for Pierre, or were they not archived?

Thanks again guys!

Hi. alex,

As far as I can decipher the text: ....dant Nagelmaker, Borstelmaker, .....

 Nagelmaker >  Nail maker

Borstelmaker > Brushmaker

I think he served in the artillery and made nails and brushes etc. for the cannons
