I am the grand daughter of a man with dual Hungarian and USA citizenship who served by conscription in the Hungarian army in WW1. I am seeking his military records.

The Hungarian Military History Institute's Military History Archive offers a free research service, but it's all in Hungarian, and they're currently on summer break (

Most of the surviving pre-1918 records are in the Kriegsarchiv in Vienna, but the Hungarian archive maintains a delegation there.

Here's a quick translation of their research service information page:
Data necessary to research military ancestors
Dear inquirer,
We ask that before filling out the text form linked at the bottom of the page, please read the short article "To the attention of those researching military ancestors", which explains the available research materials for Hungarian citizens who served in the military in the first and second world wars, and which is also linked at the bottom of the page.
Unfortunately, there is not always archive material available for us to provide any data on the military or work camp service of the desired person.
We emphasize that the person making the inquiry must in all cases give his or her OWN NAME and email address in the appropriate field, because we cannot undertake any research without these.
We ask that the filled-out form be sent as an email attachment to the address Thank you!

You may want to check out the resources of some of the projects here on Wikitree. The project list can be found under the Find drop down menu. The projects have resources that may help you with your research.

Also, if you add location and topic tags to your post you will get the attention of members with experience in those areas (Hungary, War, etc.)
