Hi,

The 1841 UK census has this Astle family registered in Shardlow District, Derbyshire - they were all born in Derbyshire:

Charles 25;  Sarah 30 (I think these ages are probably rounded to 5 yrs)

Thomas 8; Mary 7 Harriet 3 and William either 2 or 6 mths.

I downloaded the image but it is the poorest quality census image I have ever seen! Mostly unreadable.

----

In another 1841 entry:

Father Charles and wife Elizabeth are 60 (approx). Living with them are:

George Astle 12 yrs and Elizabeth Reeves 15 yrs.

All were born in Derbyshire and registered in Shardlow District.

------

In the 1851 census I cannot find any of them!

Father Charles probably d. Sep Qtr 1846 or Sep Qtr 1848.

Elizabeth prob. d. before 1851.

 ----

A possibilty for George is that he marr. Annie Compton in Jun Qtr 1860 and Eliz. Reeves may have marr. James Hooley Dec Qtr 1844.

----

These are possible marriage recs in NZ for the children:

Harriet marr. William Hooper on 18 Mar 1857.

Mary marr. Thomas Tucker on 14 Nov 1859.

William who marr. Elizabeth Ruff on 18 May 1865.

I think Thomas died c. 30 Jun 1863.

----

I hope some of this helps - good luck!

Hi,

It appears that they settled in the Nelson area of NZ. I think most, if not all, of these records are connected to your family:

Charles d. 22/3/1856

Sarah d. 8/7/1872

Thomas d. 25/6/1863

These 3 births are possibly connected and registered in Nelson:

Mary Charlotte Astle - 29/1/1861

Minnie Elizabeth Astle - 7/10/1865

Amy Astle - 28/6/1868

~~~~
I guess you know they arrived in Nelson on the BOMBAY on 14/12/1842.
I have a note to the effect that a Charles Astle was born the son of an Edward Astle [along with seven siblings,]  most probably in Wilne, Derbyshire. No dates available - BUT Edward  ASTLE [the father] was born in 1795 or thereabouts, and  was buried in 1855. Edward's wife was called Ann.
Charles was their second child.
This is probably of no use in your research, but Wilne was in the Shardlow catchment area, just across the river Derwent, and Shardlow was at that time the largest inland port, centre of the canal system.
