You said you found them in Blackfood, ID. When were they there? What type of record? Do you know the names of any of their children (besides Charles)? Any birth estimate for Charles?

I found a John and Martha Paynter in WV in the 1900 census with the following children: John, Garfield and Flora. John and Martha were born 1836.

i am thinking it was that john was in the military in the early 1800's.
