Asistance with Scottish relatives to John McLaughlan

Relates to "Assistance with McLaughlan-54 family in Scotland". First, I thank the person who pointed out ommittances on my part. So I'll add as much I have. Please note that I've made McLaughlan-54 profile public, so feel free to have a peek. John was born in Glasgow, Scotland, 25 Jan 1894. He died on 15 Nov 1969 in Vereeniging, South Africa. He married Johanna Maria Coetzer (an Afrikaner -a Boervrou- as Afrikaner women would have been referred to in to days) and at his death left her a widow. As to his arrival in South Africa, all we know is he arrived at Natal, with his mother, 2 brothers (Pat and Tom) and possibly a stepfather when he was a young boy. My grandmother (his) wife barred him from speaking about his youth and family. Till today it is a taboo subject. My thoughts are, to hide the embarrasment of having married a Brit. Marriage date I have none. Of Tom we know nothing. According to my Dad, Pat hosted a radio programme for students at Stellenbosch University, and had a son, Fred who managed a Williams Hunt car dealership in South Africa. There is a Joseph Bernes mentioned as a stepbrother?

Hello Quintin,

With regard to Scottish relatives of John Mclaughlin, the site that holds BMD records for Scotland is http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/  Scotlandspeople is free to join and search, but to view and download certificates you have to pay, it works out at ¬£1.20 (UK) per digital copy. It is the official Registrar General Web Site for Scotland. You should be able to download a digital copy of John's birth certificate from there and be able to trace the rest of his family as well.

Also you can use https://familysearch.org/which is free to join and search & view results, but they don't always support the links with documented evidence.

There are also other resources that are listed in the Scottish Clans project & U.K. project here on WikiTree that will help with other useful resources for research.

All the best

Billy
