Advice before editing this pre-1700 Maxwell profile?

Hello,

I just finished work on the profile of Barbara Steuart as part of hiking the Tartan Trail.

I have information to contribute to the profile of John Maxwell 2nd Bt. This is what I can add:

  • John's mother is listed as unknown.  However, his marriage record to Barbara lists his mother as Jean Maxwell.  Her maiden and married names both seem to be Maxwell.  FamilySearch (LZX6-2CN) lists her as the daughter of John Maxwell and Elizabeth Cunningham.  I couldn't find a birth record for her, but I do notice that the baptismal records use maiden names for women.  She is always listed as Jean Maxwell in all of the baptismal records for John and Barbara's children which list grandparents.

These are the sources I am using:

Should I contact one of the pre-1700 projects or know about any style guidelines before proceeding? Thank you!

I would check with either the Scotland Project, or the Euro Aristo Project (as John's profile is managed by that Project).

I think it is best to contact one of the pre-1700 projects, this person is not in our tree

Hi Betsy

Sorry I didn't see this post until just now, and I notice you have already added Jean Maxwell as John's mother, but I am going to mark that as uncertain pending further investigation.

Unfortunately the source you are using, like many generic FamilySearch databases is "based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah" and not necessarily from original parish records.  In fact the marriage record of John Maxwell and Barbara Stewart, doesn't mention his parents or the name of her mother.  Although this is a transcription of the Canongate register of marriages, I have confirmed that this is all that is written in the register.

The Complete Baronetage, vol. 4, p. 313 does state that Jean Maxwell, daughter of John Maxwell of Southbar, was the mother of John Maxwell, 2nd Baronet, but would like to be able to confirm that with primary sources if possible.

Hello John--I'm sorry that it took me a few days to reply.  I definitely understand the need for more conclusive proof with primary sources.  Thank you for introducing me to the Canongate register!  I've added that to my list of resources to consult for Scottish profiles.  Cheers, Betsy
