Is there any more information you can give?  Right now "Australia" as a birth place is just too broad.  I found nothing in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, or South Australia.  For me, there's just too little information to do any kind of proper search.
I added a link to Sagenealogy. She is definitely a South Australian. Part of the 2nd generation of McAvaney's some could read and write some couldn't. I live in regional South Australia and I am looking anxious to getting to State Archives to try and complete her search. All I know is her family were itinerant roamers.

I am not sure if Annie McAvaney was her Mother.

Hi B!  Since I'm not a member of the SA site, i can't see some of the pertinent info.  Could you include what you can see by writing it into the bio?

All I can see is that she was admitted to the Hospital, Asylum and Lying-in Home in 1910 and she is now 20.  I can't tell if 'now' is still 1910, 1911, or 1930.  I also am not clear on which town or city the institution is located in....

The hospital was located in Adelaide, I am a member, all I can see is what you see. It is quite a brick wall.

On her page McAvaney-123 is all I am able to find. There were hospitals in Kapunda, Peterborough, but the main Destitute Asylum was in North Terrace Adelaide.

I also tried finding her listed in Paupers graves, but to no avail.

I am hoping to get to State archives as soon as possible, I done what I can with them on line. There I am hoping to come up with answers.

It took me years to find out what happened to her Grand Mother Mary McAvaney all because of so many different spelling of the Surname McAvaney

Hi B!  You have mentioned in the bio that you have seen a source where Kate is living with Annie in Petersborough.  Can you include a link to that and/or mention which year that was happening?

Thanks for making a profile and linking it to your question.  That really helps!

Could i also suggest that you 'tag' your question with 'Australia' and also Kate's surname so it will come to the attention of wikitreers who are following those tags.  Here is some info about Tags https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Tags

Links to her pages on sagenealogy.. She is part of the 2nd generation of itinerant roamers that could not read or write. I live in regional South Australia, at the moment I am eagerly waiting to get down to State archives to try and find out more information on her.

This is likely why Kate was admitted to the Destitute Asylum.

South Australia Birth Index. (Genealogy SA, https://www.genealogysa.org.au/index.php : accessed 27 September 2021) birth transcript for MCAVANEY, Myrtle Mary (Gender: F, Birth Date: 17 March 1910, Father: , Mother: Katie MCAVANEY, Place of Birth: Adelaide) Reference: District: Adelaide, Book/Page: 838/259.

The Annie McAvaney at Peterborough was formerly Annie Crittenden.

South Australia Marriages 1842-1937 (FindMyPast, https://www.findmypast.com ; accessed 27 September 2021) transcript for McAvaney, Patrick (Age: 30, Status: Single, Father: John McAvaney) and Crittendon, Annie Jane (Age: 28, Status: Single, Father: John Crittendon) on 11 November 1884 at [Unrecorded] Kapunda, Reference: District: Kapunda, Book/Page: 141/705.

Their children appear to be born in and near Kapunda and if you search Trove you will see that both Annie and Patrick had a long history of trouble with the law. Annie was in Peterborough after 1900, as was her mother Sarah Crittenden.

South Australia Deaths 1842-1972 (FindMyPast, https://www.findmypast.com : accessed 27 September 2021) transcript for McAveney, Patrick (Death Date: 8 July 1912, Marital Status: Married, Age: 58y, Residence: Caltowie, Death Place: Caltowie) Reference: District: Clare, Book/Page: 367/35.

South Australia Deaths 1842-1972 (FindMyPast, https://www.findmypast.com : accessed 27 September 2021) transcript for McAvaney, Annie Jane (Death Date: 13 February 1919, Marital Status: Widowed, Age: 64y, Relative: Patrick Mcavaney (Deceased husband), Residence: Peterborough, Death Place: Jamestown) Reference: District: Clare, Book/Page: 425/487.

There are only 3 children registered for Annie and Patrick, so you're in for some fun.

In 1893 two of Annie's children, Ellen and Edward, were removed due to neglect and sent to Magill. Once the kids are in the system there are usually very good records of them, at State Records.

In January 1884, Patrick McAvaney was charged on information supplied by Anne Crittenden, for neglecting to maintain his 2 illegitimate children. They're not registered. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/106577018?searchTerm=%22patrick%20mcavaney%22

In January 1890 Patrick was charged for failing to support his 3 children, and at this time we know he has 2 children born since his marriage, plus 2 prior to marriage.

After 12 Dec 1907 the death certificate states birthplace and length of time in the Commonwealth, if known. It also included the number of children of each gender and whether they were living or deceased, if known, but there were no names.

Patrick apparently lived on his own for some time before his death, so you're unlikely to get any clues there. Annie's son Edward placed a notice in the newspaper when she died, and considered her a good/loving mother, so they had contact. You might get some idea of the number and genders of children from Annie's death certificate. Genealogy SA will provide transcipts much cheaper than you can purchase a certified copy. They're also much faster - only a few days, compared to > 2 months last time I purchased certified copies of marriage certificates from the Registry.
There is a birth for a Catherine McAvaney in Yongala in 1889 and given that her mother was a Crittendon, these McAvaneys are likely connected to Patrick and Annie.

South Australia Births 1842-1928 (FindMyPast, https://www.findmypast.com : accessed 27 September 2021) transcript for McAvanay, Catherine Madeline (Birthdate: 28 August 1889, Father: Edward McAvanay, Mother: Annie Eliza Crittendon, Birthplace: Yongala) Reference: District: Clare, Book/Page: 445/459.

I cannot find a marriage or death for this Catherine.
Thank you this I will follow-up when I get home I knew about the law problems. I have also read  the stories on trove. Just get my head around  it all as I am doing it all on my own.

If you're not familiar with FAN Club research (Friends, Associates, Neighbours), Legacy Family Tree Webinars has a webinar on the topic that is free to view until 1st October.  https://familytreewebinars.com/webinar/fan-club-in-action-a-simple-case-study/

I suggest that you make good research notes on profiles and categorise them for all known locations. Many of the Irish in SA did not register births and deaths and were itinerant throughout the mid north.

If you need any categories created add them here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Categories_Waiting_to_be_Added_or_Renamed

Thank you for your comprehensive reply. Believe me it has been a challenge working my way through my Father's ancestors. I have quite a folder to take to State archives when I get a chance. There is quite a list including police files to take with me. Plus children boarded out. Patrick's Father was a convict that made his way to Kapunda from N.S.W my family and I had some fun finding him and the property, a simple equation, Name Change Devanny,- McAvaney, the so many other spellings for McAvaney. I will look at the space categories. I am still learning. Barbara

Here's another webinar about the FAN Club, using an Australian family and free until 1st October.

Have it playing now while I am working. My base program I use is Roots Magic which is similar to a spread sheet and I can colour code on it.. I'm listening more than working.
