How do I know if a ancestor is related to me

Hello. I am trying to figure out if a person is an ancestor.

I am on Ancestry, 23and ME, Wiki, FamilySearch. I have taken the test on Ancestry and 23. Doing Ancestry first, (plus following other family trees)  I had William H. Foster as my 3rd great grandfather with Phineas being his father. the family decending William Asbury/Asberry Foster as his son, Levi Allen Foster being Asbury's son, Dolf Foster being Levi's son, Bobby Foster being Dolf's son and I am Bobby's daughter Tina Foster.

I then went on 23 and started my tree. I came across John Coman Foster as being Asbury's father. I have since looked for other sources. The only thing I know for sure is up to Asbury but not positive on Asburys birth date or place. It was abt 1836 in Tennessee but I am not confirming that when I look up info. His death is stating 1902 in Missouri. I wish there was a way to look at percentages like a paternity test to see who it is for sure. The closer the relative the closer the one you are looking for.

Have you looked at your shared matches on Ancestry?  If you have several who descend from Fosters who are siblings of your possible ancestors, that might give you some good clues for further research....

I have tried. The thing that is holding me up is that the people who put other names down was just following other family members. They had not done the research. I ended up deleting all my information because I thought I was wrong. Now I have no idea and I can’t get my info back because I deleted it.
