Descendants of Randal Petty (Pettie) in Halifax, VA

Need help furthering my lineage.  Can't find the father of Randal (1802-1881).

The Virginia, U.S. Deaths and Burials Index, 1853-1917 (https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=2558&h=77908&tid=&pid=&queryId=91aa2ef9b17fdb79b08919e385f61799&usePUB=true&_phsrc=qcN39587&_phstart=successSource) says Randal Petty (1801-7/1/1881) of Halifax, Virginia was the son of James and Lucy Petty.

I saw that and accepted it at first.  But then my DNA Thrulines on ancestry doesn’t match me to James, but it does to his wife Lucy, so I’m thinking the “Jas.” On the certificate may either refer to a different James or Lucy had some kind of infidelity with a relative of James, and it’s just assumed he is the father.

I wouldn't rely on Thrulines unless you check and verify all the trees- Ancestry is assuming that other people's trees are accurate.

That is very correct. 

• I have a 4th great grandfather Petty, that I know I have right.
• Thru lines still tries to push me into a different 4th great grandfather, that I have evidence is incorrect. 
• The reason Thru lines does that, is someone went down the incorrect road, and many people. blindly followed.
