Hi John!

I have had a look at James' profile and added some notes to the bottom.

There are a number of options for records for him in Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately, I am unable to narrow them down at this time.

I would suggest to you that you might try working your tree forward at this time. If you are able to create profiles for the children of James and Catherine and source their birth, marriage, and death records, we may be able to narrow down where James was born.

Also I think you have Catherine duplicated, so her two profiles should be merged.

Let us know if you need any help with that!!

The children from James and Catherine have been researched, I have trees on too many sites and do most of my research on Ancestry. Leo John James is my grandfather, he was easy to research. His brothers and sisters have also been researched, and I even have SS-5's from most of them. They all show him born in Canada, either in Quebec (Roman Catholic) or (Protestant) Ontario. There was also a possible birth in Nova Scotia, but it never panned out. There is also that anomaly in the census records, one saying English Canada the other French Canada. That is why I started paying for the SS-5's on the aunts and uncles as well as my grandfather.

Hi John,

As Christine suggests, I think the way forward is through the children. In the 1892 Census, there are children listed from a previous marriage. (I've added the 1892 Census source to the profile.)

It may be that James was born in Ireland and, as a police officer in New York, chose to disguise the fact. The Irish immigrant-supported police department was being investigated for corruption in the 1890s. The two wildly different dates given for immigration to the U.S. could indicate that Canada as his place of birth is suspect, also the switch from Ontario to Quebec.

Best of luck in your search.
