I have just come back from a weekend spent in Buckinghamshire, England, where I was able to spend some time visiting the places where my ancestors lived and worked.
First to Wingrave where I have been in touch with the local historical society who have provided me with images of family members and a well-produced book of the history of the village. Here I was told of a grave in the cemetery of the former United Reformed Church chapel with the family name. Yes! It was the brother of my great great grandfather. Nearby was a small grave marker for a child, Ernest George Honor, giving names of his parents. Possibly another branch of the family I know nothing about?
Later I went to Wendover and was pleased to find the grave of my great great grandfather, and grandmother. More little pieces of information to add to the big tree. To round it off I was able to see the water mill where he was the miller and a row of cottages adjacent to where he lived. (his cottage was demolished many years ago). Being there and seeing things he might have seen made it all the more real.
For those who not tried it I can recommend contacting local history societies as they often have vast amounts of knowledge they are willing to share with anyone interested. I have now contacted four, and in every case they couldn't have been more helpful. If they can help a small donation to their funds is gratefully received.
