What is the correct death date for Jean Godefroy de Linctot, born 1608 France and died 1678-1681 Nouvelle-France? [closed]

WikiTree and WikiData have differing dates in their corresponding death date fields for Jean Godefroy de Linctot (26 Mar 1678 and Jul 1681, respectively). This results in a "558 Wikidata - Different death date" suggestion. Sources found to date indicate a variety of possible death/burial dates for him, but I've been unable to find any contemporary sources for any of the potential death dates. It's likely that he died and was buried in or near Trois-Rivières, Nouvelle-France. A notarial act documents a donation that he made to 5 of his children on 22 Mar 1678, and his wife appears to be a widow in the census dated 14 Nov 1681, so he likely died between those dates. I was unable to find a burial record for him in the Family Search parish records for that location and time frame. Please see the Research Notes section of the profile for a discussion of all the potential death/burial dates and their sources.

The book Our French-Canadian Ancestors cites a source, Archange Godbout in Les pionniers de la région trifluvienne, première série: 1634-1647, La Bien Public, 1934, page 25. But I've been unable to find that source online or at my local library.

The sources are referenced inline in the Biography and Research Notes sections, and are all abstracted (mostly in English) at the end of the Research Notes section. For sources that are found online, links are included in the Sources section.

At this point, I've changed the status of the WikiTree death date field for Jean from certain to uncertain for the 26 Mar 1678 death date.

Les pionniers …, according to WorldCat, is held by a few libraries in Canada and the US. Perhaps it might be available on inter library loan. The Family History Library in Salt Lake also has a hard copy, but it is not digitized.

Since you have an exact citation perhaps one of the holding institutions would photocopy that one page for you.

It may also turn out that the best you can determine is that Jean died between those two dates.

…edit…

FamilySearch has a lookup service! See https://www.familysearch.org/family-history-library/family-history-library-records-look-up-service

You can get the full library reference for the book from the FamilySearch catalog.

Hi George,

Thanks for your response. We were able to find his burial record in the parish records at Family Search.

Thanks for sharing the information about the Family Search lookup service. I was not aware of that.

Jean Godefroy was buried at Trois-Rivières on 26 Mar 1678 according to records of Institut généalogique Drouin - suggesting a date of death on that day or shortly prior.

Fichier Origine is in accord:

GODEFROY DE LINTOT, Jean

Décès ou inhumation Trois-Rivières, 26-03-1678

Hi Tyler,

Thanks for your response. We were able to find his burial record in the parish records at Family Search.
Rick - glad to hear the date and place checked out - and that Drouin and Fichier Origine didn't make it up!

And thanks for provoking the short brush up in Latin - one of my early teachers would be happy (although he wouldn't have let me write like Godefroy's priest did = )

Drouin institute has a file that puts his funeral at 26 March 1678, but there is no record attached to it, and perusal of Trois-Rivières records that are available doesn't have such a funeral listed in the original records.

Tanguay puts his death as ''before 1681'' (Vol ! pg 273)

Jetté puts his funeral as 26 March 1678, he is citing Godbout's work on Trois-Rivières (not available online), Sulte's ''Mélanges historiques'' vol 11 pg 7-38, DBC,  P.G. Roy's ''La famille Godefroy de Tonnancour''.

https://numerique.banq.qc.ca/patrimoine/details/52327/2021907?docref=0UpJunisaOjkt44jrhmjyg PDF, free download from BAnQ

Sulte actually says he died at the beginning of the summer of 1681 (pg 27 bottom of page).

Can't find Pierre-Georges Roy's whole work on the family, he gets cited repeatedly but no luck with the actual work.

DBC says 1681  http://biographi.ca/fr/bio/godefroy_de_lintot_jean_1F.html

I suggest you mark the DBE about divergence with WikiData as false error.  They provide no source.

Thanks Danielle. Have you had experience asking either IGD or Fichier Origine for the source documents supporting their files..?
Hi Danielle,

Thanks for your response. I had not found the burial record for him in the Trois-Rivières parish records at Family Search, but another WikiTreer just sent me a private message with the link to his 26 Mar 1678 burial record there:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-899Q-H97V-N

I've updated his profile with the burial record source/abstract and removed the now unnecessary death/burial date research note.

I'll also mark the 558 DBE as a false suggestion.

Thanks again!
nice, that's why it's always good to check both the Drouin collection and the FamilySearch one, which are NOT the same thing, they are done at different times by different people, and sometimes differ as Drouin photographed one set and FS another in some cases.  2 sets of records were being made, one kept in parish, the other sent to a central registry.
Tyler, yes, I do it fairly regularly with IGD, and Fichier also gets my contributions once in a while.

Thanks Danielle - it's good to know they're responsive.

And that we won't have to get on them this time... laugh
