30% off Ancestry.com sale

Over Christmas 2020 I let my Ancestry.com membership lapse because I wasn't doing any personal genealogy.  Now that I'm ready to renew I've been looking for a sale.  A friend received a 50% off "one day only" sale email on 7 September.  I tried to sign up for this but I was told it was only for new clients.

While doing some project edits late the other night I decided to call Ancestry.  I expressed my dissatisfaction that this sale was offered to a new client but not to me.  Had I closed my account instead of letting it go inactive I would have been able participate.  The customer service rep said it was in problem and instantly offered me a 30% discount if I wanted to renew.

I do not know if that was a one-off or if that is common practice but if you are about to re-establish your account it certainly wouldn't hurt to ask for a discount.  That she was so quick to offer the discount makes me think that it is a regular thing.

So if you need to renew your account or if you're thinking of starting a new account, you might give this a try.  And if you do, and it works, please report back and let us know.

Yesterday, in order to access an exclusive pension record, I entered a free trial for Fold3 (which is owned by Ancestry). Once I downloaded the record I immediately cancelled the trial. A few minutes after cancelling it gave me a standard cancellation email apart from what was at the bottom. It said "Before you go, try this option instead" and presented me a half-off coupon so that I would be billed $40 (USD) instead of the $80 it would have charged if I didn't cancel.

I didn't take it up because I had only wanted one document but it's a type of marketing you don't often see in the UK.

Good to know David, maybe I'll try the 2 week trial at Ancestry and then quit and maybe they'll offer me 1/2 off. smiley

OK, I just signed up for a 2 week trial account.  I'll check back in on this in 13 days!

I just cancelled and their auto-response said I already had the lowest price ($99 for 6 months) but they offered me a 30% discount when I called in.  So, I've just now cancelled and will call on the phone for the discount later.

SJ, we understand cost can be a concern.

We’d hate to see you miss out on more family discoveries. Take a look at our other memberships to see if they suit your needs better.

It's generally been possible to get a six-month subscription to the U.S. Discovery plan of Ancestry.com for $49 over the past few years.  The discount is greater for the higher end plans.  I've done it a few times where I canceled at the end of my subscription and then re-subscribed at the lower rate.  The link tends to change, but currently https://www.ancestry.com/cs/offers/freetrial works to get the discount (choose the 6-month membership and pay upfront).  Ancestry notifies you that your subscription is about to renew, so you have a chance to cancel before being billed again.  This only works if you don't have an active subscription.  To associate the new subscription with your existing Ancestry.com account, you will login instead of creating a new account during the purchase process.  It's been a while since I did this since I can get the library edition indefinitely.

I'd love to have for $49.  I'm about to sign up for the 2 week and will cancel it after 10 days and see what they offer me.
