Disputed parents of Richard Smith-40488, Sr.

Question

I think it is unlikely that John of Nibley (Smith-7466) Smyth and Mary Browning-71 had two sons named Richard (Smith-40488 and Smith-54694) that grew to adulthood, married different women and died in Wethersfield, CT. I think these parents should be disconnected from Smith-40488.  However, I don't know for sure if there is documentation to support this parent-child link to Richard Smith, Sr. that married Rebecca Buswell.

Can someone help me decide which son should be disconnected from these parents?  I don't want to do the wrong thing, but I dispute this connection to Smith-7466 and Browning-71 for lack of sources.  Thank you!

It does appear that Richard Smith-40488 should be disconnected and that the other Richard Smith-54694 is the right son.

Now we need to see if Richard Smith-40488 has parents that can be agreed upon.

For sure, more eyes  and research on these confusing profiles would help.

PS This NEHGR research article disputes John Smith-3649 as being this Richard's father, and appears to conclude that parents are unknown.
