For important changes such as the one yesterday, I agree there needs to be good communication.
A collaborative site such as WikiTree needs to have a pervasive, effective series of communication avenues to get the word out to all users. Ideally, such communication would be a two-way street to solicit feedback, as well as inform. I suspect that there are MANY people who don't look at G2G on a daily basis, and so other communication channels also need to be used.
What about leveraging other social media channels and the WikiTree blog? Perhaps, even a notification message could be be used, that appears for all WikiTree users, and which they have to consciously click on to close (not sure the best mechanism for this, but I'm thinking of something like the notification flag in Facebook or Google+ that alerts me to new messages).
