Suggest category US President Direct Ancestor be changed to US President Ancestor. I don't know what an indirect ancestor is.

As part of the US President's Project, we are trying to limit this category to those who are "Direct" ancestors of the US Presidents; ie, grandparents, great grandparents, etc.  Not great aunts, great uncles, great nieces, or step parents, of course, great great aunts, etc.

Indirect line - I usually refer to this as collateral line, are the great aunts, uncles, cousins.

Does a broad consensus want the category to be narrowed to direct-line only?  If there is drive to narrow to direct-line ancestors, should that not be made in a new project such as, for example, "US President Direct Line"?  It seems that many people might want to know about collateral relationships in a large tree project like Wikitree, in comparison with personal trees such as are presented elsewhere.  Why not have both direct and collateral relationship projects?  Collateral relationships could have a limit to how many marriages can be involved.  Note that half-sister/brothers can have the same parent, either mother or father, meaning still genetically related.  And if the limitation on the number of marriages, then 3 categories to include direct, collateral within 'three degrees' for example, and collateral beyond 'three degrees', etc.  That way, people are not excluded, and yet the category has some significance.  Or, are such divisions necessary at all?

Are we ready to tell people that their relationship to a president is of no significance if it is not direct-line?

What does seem significant, however, is the control of individual profiles for individual people by other people who are relatively distant in relationship, and so might have limited understanding of the family history..

I suppose the meaning being suggested between direct and indirect would be direct line ancestors being parents, grandparents, great grandparents.  An indirect ancestor would probably be a cousin's wife's great uncle's step-mother's grandmother's third husband's brother.  Considering that we are probably all related indirectly, there really wouldn't be a need for any category other than "humans".

But that is not an ancestor.
what about your niece's nephew and great or grand ( I am never sure which is the correct term) nieces and nephew? They aren't direct descendants but they are still pretty close family.
True.  Nor are they indirect descendants.

why the need for a tautological adjective at all?
I have to admit that a "Human" Category has some perverse appeal ...
I use niblings for nephews and nieces.

great niblings for their children.
That is great I love that
My conclusion is that this is a present day example of the language changing.

for example there is no way AJ Jacobs can have all these "cousins". However he certainly has all these connections.

Perhaps it should be - US President Ancestor, Direct Line.
