right hand side profile pages

Is it possible for the righthand side of the profile page to be be added to the Tree and Tools Section or at the very least mimimized to half its size now, I know this could be difficult given that the photo thumbnail and background were needed to be on the profile but surely this can be ammended to come from the Tree and Tools Section this would neaten up a lot of profile pages

That's the best idea I've heard in a long time!  I have long thought that i was the only one who thinks profile pages would look an order of magnitude nicer if all the stuff on the right side were not there as a distraction.

Paul, I don't think it would have any impact on the thumbnail, background, or any other pictures, for that matter.  They can still be attached to the profile without having to be displayed on the profile page.  They can be displayed by clicking the images tab.

Mm... I wouldn't want to lose most of what's in the right hand column EXCEPT the thumbnails of the Photos. There's a tab for them; they should be there. And especially when inline photos are used in the narrative-- then you have duplication. (I've long lobbied for this change, but it hasn't gained sufficient traction to draw the attention of admin.)

I definitely would not want message posts to go away, nor links to g2g discussions. If they weren't in the right hand column, no one would EVER see them.

I think, too, that we've seen a great deal of unhappiness for removing from the main screen a number of things that people used regularly. Having to go to a separate page to do the things we regularly do would discourage collaboration and participation. IMHO, of course. ;-)

Aw, Jillaine, it's not that we don't notice. :-)

I think removing the image section will happen (or more likely, changing to a pop-up slideshow) but we're not there yet. The slideshow we were planning is a little buggy on some systems. Plus, I think this works better if more people do inline images. Right now that's just done by a small fraction of WikiTreers. And, in fact, as Paul knows, we don't even have an officially recommended style for it. Rob and I are working on that right now.
yippee! ;-)

Hi Jillaine

I did say either, move to tree and tools, or at least minimise the size to half of what it is now, they could do this by leaving every thing there but rearranging it so it takes up more length than width, and as you say the photo could be moved to their rightful place, I had a few other Ideas but my memory doesn't like me and I can't remember them at the moment

The profile pages could look a bit neater but I don't think we should eliminate the right column. I would rearrange it however; place the comments near the top and information about DNA, Collaboration, Search, etc. farther down. Images are an issue in themselves; inline images and/or a slideshow may allow their removal from the right.

I would also move the colored block of information listing the Profile Manager, recent changes, and number of page accesions from the left column to the top of the right column. The left (primary) column should be exclusively devoted to the actual profile. The right (secondary) column should be concerned with the mechanics of creating and maintaining the profile.
