Difference between a Mayflower category and Mayflower Project?

+10 votes
What is the difference between a Project and a Category? For example, the profile for Thomas Cushman Sr., has a category for Mayflower Families, and a Project of PGM. Shouldn't all Mayflower Families (by Category) also be part of the Mayflower Project?

In the case of a person who looks like he should be added to the Mayflower Project, should I also add Mayflower Familes as a Category?  (see Cushman-137 for example)

These are only two examples. I am trying to apply the right projects and/or categories to the profiles I manage, or are in my direct line, and came up with this question.

This seems confusing...Is there something I can look at that explains the usage of categories vis-a-vis projects?

He has the category "Mayflower Families" because he lived with a Mayflower family.

He does not have the Mayflower Project tag, because that is reserved for passengers on the Mayflower.

And because he did not come on the Mayflower, but migrated to New England before 1640, he falls under the care of the Puritan Great Migration Project.

Thanks for the explanation for him.

More broadly, two questions:

  1. According to the project page, Mayfower covers passengers as well as their descendants for two generations, so all of the children and grandchildren should all be part of the Mayflower Project. Correct? And should they also be given the category of Mayflower Families?
  2. Do profiles need to be given both Project and Category assignments? Are categories serving a different purpose than Projects?
