Bert Newton, probably Australia's most famous local performer passed Saturday.

Feel free to post some great memories that you have of Bert here. He almost got himself in deep water with Muhammad Ali that one time at the Logie Awards.

His profile could also certainly use some work, fitting his career. He is almost connected to the global tree, and hopefully could be suggested to be added into a weekly spotlight.

Perhaps we could have an Australian highlighted week. We could include Ernie Sigley, who passed recently. We could include Brian Naylor who passed in the Black Saturday fires a number of years back. We would have some work to do, getting trees in, and profiles prepared. Is there any other television personalities that should be included, if Wikitree would allow us an Australian television week. I know Graham Kennedy is already ready to go.
Thanks Ben. Bert is such a sad loss. Warm, generous and so, so talented. The Australia Project got access to his profile yesterday, so hopefully his profile will be looking great soon. Thanks for your input on connecting him up. Love the Australian Television week suggestion!

Is it possible to create a free space page which automatically shows "Notables" sorted by most recent to have passed away.

Filter Options:

  • Country / Region
  • Profession (Entertainment, Sports, Politics)
  • Time Period (last week, last month, last year)

This template could then be used by everyone.

By extension would it be possible to subscribe to a set of parameters (e.g. Australia / Entertainment / Last Week) so that when matches are found, an email is sent which includes link to the relevant profiles?

I think we could afford to add a few more categories here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Australia%2C_Project_Managed_Profiles

Australian television and radio personalities.

Australian Sporting champions.

Australian music performers.

etc

We already have all those categories in the Australia, Notables category structure. Not all notable Australians are Project managed.

Maybe easier to forgot about the "Profession", hopefully not that many "Notables" are passing away.

Also instead of having filters, perhaps just create static pages which are updated weekly (as new profiles are created over time) to fixed time periods (e.g. weekly, monthly, yearly).

Click: Country > Time Period > Page

Weekly Example:

  • Country = AUS
  • Time Period = Weekly
  • Page = Week 44-2021 (Sun 24/10/21 to Sat 30/10/21)

Monthly Example:

  • Country = AUS
  • Time Period = Monthly
  • Page = Oct-2021
Thank you Margaret. I thought there must be, but I couldn't find it.
While not all of them have profiles, since we generally go by Wikipedia for our Notables, the list of "deaths" they provide is usually a good starting place.

Handy list Scott. Thank you. Then it is just a matter of doing a page search for 'Australian'.

It would be good if we could add some of the info they showed on “Who do you think you are?” Some interesting info about his grandparents….
