What is the proper way to record religious names?

In his sépulture this young man is noted to be: Frère Valencien (des Ecoles Chrétiennes) né Joseph Ruel.

How is the religious name best displayed in his profile, should his preferred name be Valencien? Should his current last name remain Ruel?

Thank you, Christine (Mama Kiki)

Frère would go in the Prefix box, Valencien would go in current last name.  ''Des Écoles Chrétiennes'' has no place in name fields, goes in bio, that's where he worked.  wink

And Joseph Ruel is OK for the birth name?
of course, if that's what he was baptized under, haven't looked at it.
Interesting, Thank you Danielle. I would have put Valencien as his preferred first name and left Ruel as his CLN.

most religious names are the only name used for them after they enter religious orders, actually unusual that they put his birth name in the record, but then, might depend on the era.

My suggestion:
Proper First Name and Preferred Name: Joseph
Last Name at Birth and Current Last Name: Ruel
Other Nicknames: Frère Valencien

or
Proper First Name and Preferred Name: Joseph
Last Name at Birth and Current Last Name: Ruel
Other Last Name(s): Frère Valencien des Ecoles Chrétiennes

I have an aunt and uncle who took religious names, so was wondering the same thing.

I think that different religious orders have different customs, but both of them kept their original last name.(Their gravestones are inscribed with religious first name / original last name.)

So I guess I'll put their religious names as "preferred name", and leave their "current last name" as-is.
