Is this a new procedure I'm not aware of?

In the last 2 days I have encountered at least 5 profiles, created by 2 members of the community that fits the following pattern:

  • Member creates a profile.
  • Member adds [[WikiTree-1|Admin WikiTree]] as profile manager.
  • Member removes him/herself from profile management, leaving only [[WikiTree-1|Admin WikiTree]] as manager.

Is this a new procedure we need to follow instead of just orphaning the profiles?

Hi Andréa,

Without seeing the profiles in question (thank you for not posting them!) I can still tell you with some certainty that those are related to The WikiTree Challenge. We usually create hundreds of new profiles while filling out the guest's branches. In order to make it easier for the guest and the participants, we have the profiles turned over to the WikiTree account so that we can offer the guest the option of adopting them all at the end of their week, or shortly after. If you see profiles that haven't been created recently, those were for earlier in the year. You can certainly ask to be added to the Trusted List (or PM) if you want to take on the responsibility of caring for the profile yourself.

I hope that I have explained this properly. We certainly don't mean to cause any confusion or aggravation. I see you commented that some lines are related, so please don't hesitate to ask to adopt them if it wasn't for a recent guest!

Andrea, no we certainly do not need to add Admin WikiTree as profile manager of any profiles!  If you are the only profile manager and click the REMOVE YOURSELF button on the privacy page then the profile will be orphaned.

Please note, though, that if the profile is of a living person, I believe that you will not be permitted to orphan it.

The profiles created were not for living people. And the members that created them are not 'new' to WikiTree neither, thus my confusion as to why they are doing this.

And I think that in case we find that the profile belongs to a living person, we should add Admin WikiTree so that the Team can take care of it. At least that is a procedure when we encounter a "living profile" when we date the undated profiles.

Jelena, yes, you're right.. but as I mentioned above your comment, they are not for private people. Being born in the 1730s doesn't justify it.
Jelena, even if someone wanted to add Admin WikiTree to the trusted list, they would have to know the email address for that account to be able to do it.  I don't know that, and I don't think most of us know it either.

Andrea, it really does sound like a very strange thing to do.  Why don't you send a private message to the members doing it and ask they why?

Gaile, I'm doing that right now because one of the person creating the profiles is creating cousins of my main ancestors and with WikiTree Admin as the manager, I can't adopt them and it's .... well, gently said, putting me in a state!

Andrea, please try to calm down - although I understand your feelings about wanting to manage these profiles, this is far from the worst things that have happened to profiles of our ancestors here!  If you write to:

and explain that you would like to adopt these profiles, I'm sure they can help.
