I have once or twice seen cases (at my work) where people had problems with image files because the extension had an extraneous period at the end of the name, for example: filename.jpg. Some software wouldn't care - it would determine the file type by looking inside the file, other software only looked at the file name and would not recognize it without fixing the extension.
If your operating system hides file extensions (by default MS Windows did the last time I used it) it might be worth unhiding file extensions and having a look.
