Nothing I have found(patent/land transactions, will, etc) say where in New York. No obit. Any ideas of different avenues I might explore?

You might try looking for an obit through old papers posted on line. Since you have his death date, name of cemetery and name of town he is buried. Library of Congress has an old newspaper section online that I have browsed through. Check the library in his area of living see what could suggest.
