Hi Helen Thank you for that. I’ve recently tried to find a person of that name with a father called Edward however I can’t find any evidence that a person called James FitzEdward Stewart existed anywhere at all other than being born in Perthshire and thereafter vanishing entirely. There was an assumption made by another family member that he was the father of William Stewart baptized 26 July 1770 and it was entered as such on ancestry.com where it has since been taken up by others but I can find no evidence of that at all thus far. Oddly, even googling that name multiple times brings up no such names.. although there are Fitz... almost everything else..

Were they referring to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Fitz-James_Stuart,_2nd_Duke_of_Berwick

There is no profile attached so not sure what other information might be.

Not according to the register of his birth. It is quite explicit. I cant see how to upload it or I would do so. Old Parish Registers Birth Ref 339 10/ 254 Clunie. National Records of Scotland accessed 25 June 2020. Father is listed as Charles Stewart of Wester Gourdie.

I suspect it is a child who died soon after birth but cant find any record of that either. But given that Fitz normally denotes landed gentry, as such, the name is really odd.
Hi Lynn My apologies, I worded my reply poorly. I should have said, that according to the professional archivist, Fitz, meaning the son of.. is mostly used by landed families. however in this case, according the the birth register. the father is Charles, not Edward. It is definitely a mystery.
This is a stretch but perhaps this is the child of Charles Stewart the Jacobite, in which case maybe he named him after Charles Edward - too big a stretch?
