New member introducing myself

Hello. I am brand new to this site. I am trying to trace my dads family back as far as I can and I am starting with nothing aside from some names and being told that we have a lot of Irish in us. How should I get started?

The single most important thing is to get familiar with sources (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources). After you understand them, you'll want to keep a Research Log so that you do not wind up repeating the same steps over and over. You'll want to know what source you looked at and what you found. You should also keep track of things you looked at that did not help you, so you don't have to keep looking at that source again and again.

Right now, you are a guest member at WikiTree, so I don't think you can add to the website, but you should consider full, free membership so you can store your work here to help others. You can also use a free desktop application to track your progress and build your tree (I use Legacy).

You should start by talking to everyone in your family that you can. Record the date, what you talked about, etc. That is a source! You can purchase copies of birth and death certificates for more information (this gets expensive). You can also do research in historical societies and archives once you have a little more information. Not all records are digitized and online. FamilySearch has a good collection and is free.

Welcome, Stephanie!

You gotten some good tips from Lucy. The help pages have more tips to get you started. Start here:

Once you have upgraded and add the first few profiles, you might want to check out the resources of the Ireland project. The project list can be found under the Find drop down menu. Projects are a great way to learn more, discover new resources and connect with fellow researchers.

Come back here to the forum if you have any questions along the way. You will find that Wikitree members love to help!

Enjoy your journey into the past!
