What happens with the duplicate merged profile after merge?

I have participated with the merging of Martha Catherina Myburg (Myburg-11) and Martha Catharina Eloff (Myburgh-48).   It appears that Myburg-48 was the more complete version.

Can someone tell us what will eventually happen to Myburg-11 after the merge?  It is still there.   Is it not supposed to perhaps be "deleted" or will there not be a link to Myburg-48?

I have recieved an email that said: "A merge of Martha Catherina Myburg (Myburg-11) and Martha Catharina Eloff (Myburgh-48) was just completed by Mary Rudd."

Thanks,

Gert Kruger

The profile was merged and became Myburgh-48.  If that was not the correct LNAB then the merge should have gone the other way but in the end the profile that does not remain is just a placeholder for redirects and will never be used again so that is the reason that we want all profile merges to go to the lowest numbered profile with the correct LNAB.

Dale,

Thanks for the reply.  This is useful to understand the process better.

However, what bothers me is that I was sent an email that the MERGE was completed.  If that is the case, why can you still go to "http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Myburgh-48" and find it as well as "http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Myburg-11"?

And I have just found the answer!!  I was too impatient.  When I tried to go to the latter moments ago, it re-routes the browser to Mybrugh-48.  So, it takes a bit of time for the electronic link between the two profiles to be established.

Thanks for the help in any case!

That redirect will always be there.  That way if someone who has the old profile number and they type it in it will always redirect to the new profile.

Gert, since you seem interested in how Merges work.

Spend some time reading these sections on Merging.  It is always helpful to have more folks know about the details behind merging.

Hi Gert

Merges should take place as the higher profile number being merges into the lower number - so Myburg-48 should be merged into Myburg-11.

During the merge process,  you have the opportunity to select the fields in the final version, (see the green and yellow fields on the merge page).  So if one has a birthdate of  about 1670 and the other has dob as May 1, 1671 you can check the correct  so that it appears in the final record. Last/Right hand  column shows what is being kept.

Once a merge is complete, the new profile will contain details from both of the original profiles.

The biography will contain all the information from both profiles and should be edited once the merge is complete.  Removing redundancies, organized etc.

To view all the changes that have occured with either profile, click the CHANGES Tab, that is found in the Tab row across the top of the final profile.   This page shows all the edits and when they were done.  You can click on any edit - and then see previous or next change by clicking those buttons.

If you look at the progile and change tab the LNAB is spelled differently so the merge went to Myburgh-48.  The other profile was Myburg-11, no h.
