Do you feel guilty that you are dragging down your usual 'Thon Team, because "everyone else" is doing 300 profiles to your one?  (I know I have done.)

Do you even avoid signing up for 'Thons because you just "work so slowly" that you fear YOU will be the reason they fail to come in the top five?  (I've felt this way, too.)

Do you want to participate, but avoid doing so for the above (or any other) reasons, and then live vicariously by hitting refresh on g2g to see what everyone else is doing?

Then WELCOME to the Toddlin' Tortoises Team — where we don't care if you are slow because you are thoroughly adding as much information as you can find, and verifying it all.  We are committed to a "whole profile approach" ideal — where we don't just add a source to satisfy requirements, and think "I'll come back later and fill the rest in" (because we almost never do — due to rabbits and squirrels and shiny things).

Our Team's commitment is to make each profile as "complete" as we can do at the time of creation (because no profile is ever "complete").

We don't care if the best you can do is a single profile.  If that's all you can manage, then that is your best!

If you haven't already registered for 2022s first Connect-a-Thon in January (starting 8am on the 14th and ending 8am on the 17th (United States Eastern time)), then this other thread is where you do that.  Be sure to click the Answer this post "button" (once the actual registration thread has been posted), and say which Team you'd like to join.

If you'd like to be a part of this Team, just say you want to play with Hertyl and Spertyl, or "I'd like to be a Tortoise", or "I want to Toddle along", or anything else that will identify the Tortoises Team as the one you wish to join.

Do be sure to click that large answer button, and not the comment link, as that won't count – and don't reply to someone else's answer, or comment, as neither of those count, either.

You can even ensure I get your name on the Team's Member list by returning here and posting to let me know!

Check the Toddlin' Tortoises Team's main page for Team info, my silly images, and maybe more (if I think of anything, or you do).  You could also add what you plan to be working on, and any resources, or hints, that you think will be helpful to others, for this 'Thon to your name once I've added it to our member list — or feel free to add it yourself!

Want to see how the Team is doing so far?   Are we still in last place?  Are you a Hare among the Tortoises?  Check here to see how we are doing.

If you have questions, comments, suggestions, or just want to "touch base" as you plod along, feel free to answer this post — or just post a comment, if that's your thing.

➢ There is also a Toddlin Totrtoises channel on Discord

➢ Note: If you are new to Discord and are taken to the registration screen, continue with the registration process and get signed into your account, then return here and click the link again.

Remember — the goal is to HAVE FUN while enhancing the overall growth and health of the Tree.

It doesn't matter if we come last.

In fact, if we DO come last, we'll have made every other Team look good!  (Who could ask for more?!)

Counting down, now -- it's only about an hour-and-a-half before registrations close.  So if you know someone who has been hesitating, tell them "it's now or never" (and off goes that invisible choir in my head).

Don't forget : the list of current Teams is here.

Registrations for this 'Thon are now CLOSED.

Thanks everyone who signed up; and thanks to those who chose to travel on the slow train with us.

Because I was asked "why the coat?" in some of my Connect-a-Thon images.  Back a while ago, there was a g2g discussion regards the various 'Thons.  There was the Source-a-Thon (SaT), the Clean-a-Thon (CaT), the Scan-a-Thon (ScaT - to differentiate it from the SaT), and the Connect-a-Thon (CoaT - to differentiate it from the CaT).

So, what else was I going to use for Connect-a-Thon images that weren't "thong" related (see Wizards of Aus) if not a coat or two.  cheeky

Love your sense of humor!

Sometimes it even happens when I'm not even trying!  laugh

The 1st Connect-a-thon for 2022 is now completed and The Southern Super Sweepers want to thank your Team for participating. It is so important for making new connections in the future. Looking forward to seeing your Team for the 2nd Connect-a-thon soon.

Why, thank you ma'am, thank you very much.  (Imagine that said with an Elvis "accent".)

We look forward to the next date, and are already preparing our best coats for the occasion.

Well, of course you are! lol

Love it!

Thanks, everyone.  I think we did pretty well, considering rabbits, and squirrels and geeseses.  Whether we come first, or last, or anywhere in between ------

I think we did great.  I love seeing our team grow.

Melanie, is there a sticker for this Thon that we can add to our profiles?
Thanks, Melanie, for all you did to manage and encourage the Toddlin' Tortoises Team to create and add quality profiles to WikiTree!

@ Julie - I do have it on the space page, but here it is {{Connect-a-Thon|team=Toddlin' Tortoises|year=January 2022|profiles=xx}} (Of course you would need to change the profiles=xx to whatever number you had.)

@ Nelda  - blush blush

(I have to admit, I got drawn away a couple of times.  Once in doing a biography for a Living Notable in the hope he will be selected for this week's Example Profile of the Week (EPOW) theme.  And once when I set out to actually Connect someone to the main Tree (and I managed it, too!).  Oh, well.  The profiles I did not add this time will happen before April, or will still be waiting for me in April - depending on the usual rabbits, squirrels, and gooseseses.  cheeky)

Thank you, Melanie.  I must have missed the link, or was looking on the wrong Tortoises page (there are several).  But I've got the sticker now.  smiley

@ Julie -- it's kind of hiding away under the un-numbered point 4 of "Current 'Thon".

(Which reminds me — I should go and change the text on that, so it's ready for the April CoaT; and other future CoaTs as well.)

Thanks, Melanie.

Melanie, I thought I pasted the sticker into my profile without changes except to add the number of profiles, but now I have a Suggestion 897 saying

"not a number: Named parameter: year

{{Connect-a-Thon|team=Toddlin' Tortoises|year=January 2022|profiles=23}}."

Did I cause this problem, or are other people getting it too?  (Is it because "January 2022" is not a year?)
My first thought is that January is what is causing the problem.  (I wonder why it doesn't yell at me on the space page - unless it's because it's a space page.)

I thought I had copied that template from someone else, so I also wonder if others are getting the DBE.

If it's okay with you all, I'd like to be a Toddlin' Tortoise for the first 2022 Connect-a-Thon. Thanks!

Hi, I just signed  Toddlin' Tortoises for the January Connect-a-Thon. I would like to take it at a slower pace than previous thons and focus on quality over quantity.

Welcome aboard the slow train!

ToddlinTortoisesConnect-1.png

I tried the "have no sleep" path once on a (I think it was) Source-a-Thon.  I fell asleep after 32 hours.  Never again. I don't know how those who go the full 72 hours do it.

(I also have to admit to being a rabbit follower, even when I have a slew of names ready to go.  I get lured away by those new, shiny, names and their sources, and my original plans go out the window (stored in my text file for "next time").)

Melanie:

I think I read that any new profile we created during this Thon also would be counted as a connection.  Did I read that correctly?
by Candyce Fulford G2G6 Pilot (118k points)

Candyce, ONLY if they are attached to a pre-existing profile.

Example :

Say I create a profile today for Jo Xyzed, but don't yet have enough information on the parents, siblings, spouse, or children, so Jo is a stand-alone.

By January I've worked my way back around (after chasing a gazillion or so rabbits down many holes) to Jo Xyzed's profile and remember that I have some notes about the mother and a sibling.  I create — as an attached profile — the mother.  That counts as a Connect-a-Thon point.

(Why the mother?  Because you cannot attach siblings to each other without at least one parent, and in my example I have no information, yet, for the father — and I dislike creating an Unknown Lastname-known if I can avoid it when I know the other parent.)

After I've created the mother's profile, I can now create an attached profile for the sibling, so I do.  That also counts as a Connect-a-Thon point (or maybe two, as it's a double attachment).

By this time I have found enough information to allow me to create a profile for the husband-father, so I start to do that and get the list of possible matches.  Down that list I find one that is the exact match to all my found records, just missing his middle name (but he has the correct middle initial).  So I thoroughly, and I mean thoroughly, check out this seeming match, and verify it is, indeed, "my" guy.  So instead of creating a new profile, I add the WT# of the found profile into the spousal slot, accept that he is also the father of the existing children, and save.  This attachment counts for the 'Thon (it's either one point, or three, or some other number, but as I'm not in it for the points, that part doesn't worry me).

If, however, after the start of the 'Thon I create a profile with no attachments to anyone else at all — that does NOT count.

If that profile is created day-1 of the 'Thon, by day-3 anyone attached to it may be counted — I'd need to double-check on that, as I've never actually done it.

Edited to clarify a point.

Thanks. That makes perfect sense.
So long as the first profile you use to attach another to for your first edit of the 'Thon has existed prior to the 14th January, it will count.

I am a very slow typist and lose focus easily. I completely agree with your low stress idea.

Is this correct? I can just add new members of my own family to the tree? My aunt, then her husband, then his parents? That sounds so much easier than what I was trying to do. I thought I had to find unconnected profiles and connect them to the Connected WikiTree?
by Sue Carda G2G6 Mach 2 (25.4k points)

Yep.  You can add your own family members, or the family members of other profiles even if they're not related to you.  smiley

I refuse to let myself get stressed out — more than I usually am, anyway  cheeky  — plus I tend to follow rabbits and squirrels, which wrecks any pre-laid plans for anything.

(I may be going back to my sister-in-law's family to see if anything new has "popped" there.  Privacy cutoff can slow things down a lot when you're trying to document more recent lives.)

if I do work on that bunch of 6 unconnected orphans that I had picked out, [[Carda-2|Mary Carda]]  is Not Ed’s mother or James’s wife. How would I change that to the actual person? I did find her and could make a nice bio from her Find a grave and census, etc.

Is this where we chat during the thon?

It is best to not change profiles that represent real people to someone else, so it might be best to leave Carda-2 to be properly sourced and attached to her correct family — unless you are absolutely certain the Mary you found records for is this Mary, and she wasn't married to James/mother of Ed. (There are folk who like to work on old gedcom imports such as those.)

-

Yep.  Unless you use discord (I don't — old computer that doesn't like new things, but other team members do), this is our chatting place.  smiley

It seems that the rules have changed. A point will now be earned for ANY new profile added to an existing profile regardless of when that profile was created.

I will be working on Scottish profiles.

Hi everyone. I have signed up for this Connect-a-Thon to Tortoises because I don't fit in any geographical teams and your teams seemed the most welcoming.

I'm fairly new to WikiTree itself, but I have quite solid genealogical knowledge. I'm currently focusing mostly on moving my whole Family Tree (~3700) individuals to WikiTree, but that will take some time.

I have the biggest knowledge of Central European ancestors - Czechia, Slovakia, Germany, Poland, Austria so that's what I'm focusing on outside of my personal tree.
by Martin Polreich G2G1 (1.2k points)
3700 is quite a lot!  (I have nowhere near that number of known ancestors and their collateral relatives — and most of what I knew before I joined Wikitree were already here for me!  Meant I could settle in and work on all my other collateral rellies!)
Yeah, I have been working on it for about 15 years and I'm lucky that the vast majority of my ancestors come only from one country - Czechia - which is the same I live in, so I don't have to deal that much with foreign records and exotic languages. Basically Czech, German and Latin are all I need. I have some fraction (about 10 %) of people which I also was able to connect via some other's trees, but the rest is all my own work. Luckily we have all primary resources (church registers) and many secondary resources available online. That speeds up work a lot!

I started out some 40-plus years ago, pretty much after having heard all my childhood about this ancestor who was a gold miner - not a panner, a miner -  and that ancestor who was a doctor, or my Granddad who travelled up and down the east coast of Australia, or my Gran who was born in Ireland but who wasn't Irish.  Then I started looking for records on them, and found my great-grandfather the Doctor, and his father the Judge, were both in the "Who's Who" of their day.  I heard from the family grapevine about cousins I never did meet, and got family stories that I have since managed to confirm as truths, not myths.

I took time off to raise my kids, then my son decided he wanted to help, so he did.  So much time we spent travelling by bus, train, and foot, to get to libraries and archives.  Now, to be able to get so much information online, it's like having a birthday every day! smiley

Hi, I just signed up with Hertyl and Spertle,  hopefully will get a few done over the few days, I spend way too much time down Rabbit Holes

The main focus of my time being Scotland, then Ireland (they often cross over anyway) - I will start checking the tree to see what's here or not, got over 5000 to start with but at the rate of tortoise angel

Hello

I just invited myself to your team for this Connect-a-Thon. Never participated in one before, but I think I can add a few.
by Richard Rosenberger G2G6 Mach 3 (35.0k points)

Welcome aboard the slow train!  There's no pressure to add a specific number, just do what you can do, and enjoy.

If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask.  There are lots of folk eager to help!

Thanks for the invite for Toddlin' Tortoise!

I am planning to fill in the last few siblings of my ancestors, and then their spouses and children. All are based in South Australia, even though I am not :)

If that doesn't keep me busy enough, then I will pick names from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Old_Colonists_Photo_Mosaic%2C_South_Australia (there are more than a thousand, but I have not finished searching for which already have profiles etc)
by Troy Phillips G2G6 Mach 1 (12.1k points)

Well, hey, I work on Queensland families, or New South Wales families, or Victorian families (and rarely Sth Aussie, West Aussie, or Tassie ones), and I don't live anywhere near any of those places.  cheeky

I just got my first connection ever in a thon. I am so excited! It showed up on the board.

I have 1 more prepared so I better get on to the next one.

Totally understand how you feel, Sara. This is not my first "connection rodeo" but I remember how I felt the first time I added a connection. Very satisfying. Hope you continue to have fun with this. You are on a very good team, in my opinion.

I just added the wife of one of my cousins. Then I found that her father already had a WikiTree profile, so I connected her to him. I don't think I get a 'thon point for it, but it still makes me feel good to have done it.

Nelda,

yes you are doing well. Yeah tortoises!

I started in December and had 2 profiles ready to go. Now I am really working at it. Spertle the tortoise is back here keeping me company. smiley

Sue

I think I need another Slowsky family member .. one being led astray by a pesky rabbit.  (Or maybe something to denote getting drawn in to de-conflating people on FamilySearch while looking for members of the family you're actually researching.)  In other words - Spertyl and Hertyl are way ahead of me!   cheeky

(It's always fun, too, being drawn after squirrels with shiny things.)

If I could stop running down rabbit holes, I'd probably get more done. If only it burned calories!
Oooh, we could patent it if it did!  (Burn calories, that is.)

I also have problems with gooseseseses.

I am loving WikiTree Bee for the Auto Bios, so much easier to go back and flesh out profiles once you've added spouses children etc, and the right click for the non overwrite means you can retain the original inline citations and just copy paste the new information.. apparently it does a lot more but new to using it so haven't really tried much else

thought I was Toddling having only made 1 (proper) connection yesterday but I have just found the scoreboard and realise all the profiles created to fill in that connection with an already connected Wikitree profile must have counted for points.. surprise

by ClaireSuzy C G2G6 Mach 2 (29.3k points)
Yep.  It's really an "add a thon", but the powers that be didn't like that, so it was called a connect a thon instead.

The only things that don't count are if you attach existing profiles to other existing profiles.  Because existing is not adding!

Hi Melanie, yeah I think I've realised that, thanks for the confirmation! I realised that from my second (proper) connection (from unconnected profiles), hence me looking for the scoreboard as I'm not worried about the points really. ref the 2nd proper connection I had realised he was probably a distant relation (and my family are connected) so found the common ancestor and filled in a few new profiles to create the connection So the new profiles must explain todays points, so now it's new (sourced of course) ones rather than looking for unconnected ones.. this is fun actually, especially the learning curve with Wikitree Bee yes

I'm so not worried about points that I even forgot to fill in the "proper" connection for the Saturday/Jan challenges LOL!

Melanie, I'm enjoying this Thon, because, unlike some of the things I do on WikiTree, I'm deliberately taking my time.  I've only added about 14 profiles so far, but for each one I've tried to find something interesting to add to the biography, maybe something I hadn't known before.  I love treating profiles like people, not just collections of records.
by Living Kelts G2G6 Pilot (550k points)

I've been "stalled" for a while, trying to find something for a person who was born, was baptised, and died.  She never married -- that I can find (death registration is in her birth name), and had no children that I can find.  I can't even find her emigration/immigration information, but I know she did - because she was born in Scotland, and died in Australia.  I would LOVE to have something to add to her profile, but all I have is the above.  Well, other than that she appears to have been an only daughter, with four brothers (at least one of which died young), two brothers also emigrated.  Unfortunately for me, she lived during a time when there are few records for most people, unless they did something newsworthy -- and she seems to not have done.  My GUESS is she was housekeeper for the single brother until he married.  (The other brother married prior to emigrating.)

With the one brother I can speculate on how he and his wife met, because where their marriage was recorded (two parishes) shows that one of them travelled in a time we are constantly told "our ancestors didn't move far from where they were born".  Well, one of this couple has to have moved far - because the one parish is a 7-plus hour journey TODAY, across water, from the other parish.  So, maybe, I can find something for them, but it doesn't help with the husband's sister.  (She'll still get a profile, even if it is "bare bones".)

Ahh, such are the joys of genealogy!  laugh

Julie wrote...I love treating profiles like people.

I believe this is how they should be treated! I'm so glad you feel the same.

Just because they are dead doesn't make them less of a person than you or I.
+7 votes
I added a profile, and her parents were already on the tree. But the parents were both unsourced, so I am “wasting” time sourcing a couple of existing profiles rather than adding new ones. Oh well.
by Richard Rosenberger G2G6 Mach 3 (35.0k points)

NOT wasted time!  Never! Never! NEVER!

(I just "wasted" time adding some profiles, then diverting myself to actually make a Connection for someone.  It won't count for the 'Thon, as the profiles I Connected were existing.  Those I created to seek that Connection were down the Tree a way, and didn't lead me anywhere anyway.)

THIS is why I am a Tortoise.  Too many rabbits, squirrels, and gooses.  cheeky

I've also wasted some time in Thon terms, spending all morning researching a complicated family in order to figure out the relationships...a one-armed Civil War veteran who married a younger woman, fathered seven children, and died; the widow then married a younger man who was apparently quite a playboy...

Totally love that, it's why I end up down rabbit holes I love finding the stories, though usually can't quote them as no sources LOL

I did start off relatively well but landed down a rabbit hole yesterday angel

we did "nae bad" though and it was fun! yes Thanks Melanie!!
