Bachiler, Batchiler, Batchellor, etc.

The Rev. Stephen Bachiler came to Amercan in 1632 and then went back to England around 1650. He left behind a lot of controversy as well as children and grandchildren. The spelling of his name has varied greatly through the generations, finally settling on Batchelder. There are profiles throughout Wikitree of the same person using variant spellings of the name. I have proposed merges of some of them, but I do not know of any way to find potential merges. Is there a tool that will locate profiles that have the same sounding names with different spellings?

On a similar subject, how do we determine which variant of a name is the preferred one?

Search Ste* Bach* with date of birth 1561 +/- 30, then Ste* Batch*, that should find most of them.

Please note that Bachiler has already been determined to be the correct LNAB a while back, at least for Stephen

I was not aware that wildcards could be used in the search fields.

Thank you.

Re: determining the preferred variant of a name, we tend to post to G2G and ask people for input as to what the last name at birth (LNAB) should be. As Anne B noted, this question had been discussed (for Stephen) previously.  But definitely post on G2G whenever you're trying to figure out the proper LNAB for merges.

And kudos to you for looking for possible duplicates to merge!!
