Durkee, Durgy, Dirkee? Project?

+5 votes
Working on TIltons and came across [[Durkee-5|Thomas Durkee]].  He was born in Ipswich, MA - is there a project for him?

Has anyone looked into naming conventions for this family?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I have his brother John in my ancestry. Spellings I've seen for this family include Durkee, Dirkey, Durky, and Durke. (Researchers need Soundex for names like this!)

His maternal grandfather is part of the Puritan Great Migration project, so someone researching the Crosses might have some information about this family. I'm going to add the tags Cross, PGM, and Massachusetts to this post and remove "Surnames."

(If a PGM project leader feels that PGM is an inappropriate tag, please remove it! Thanks!)

There is a Durkee genealogical society that seems to have standardized on the spelling Durkee. See http://www.durkee.org . Considering that William, the first Mr. Durkee/Dirkey/Durke/etc., is highly unlikely to have known how to write his name, that seems like as good a good choice as any for Wikitree to follow, but we should list the other spellings as "Other last names" for the benefit of other users.

I was able to download an electronic copy of the society's published Durkee genealogy book from familysearch.org. Another version of this family's history is at http://nefamilies.com/fam/history.aspx?x=6

Thank you.  I have been using that document.  I just wanted to know if a WikiTree Project had already considered this family and naming conventions.
