James Davey appears in Mere, Wiltshire, England in 1748, when his son is baptised. Mother's name Mary.  Next records in Mere, birth of son James in May 1753, burial of wife in August and son James in September.  Then marries Mary Ford in October.  Does anybody know where James came from before Mere?  Possibly Gillingham in Dorset, but no records found so far.

I would suggest that you add what source information you have to the profile, to help prospective helpers. Where were these parish registers found?
From what little I can see, the only connection to Gillingham Dorset looks to potentially be a son James, b. 1759 to the second wife, married in 1785 to another Mary, from Gillingham.
A James Davey and his wife Mary had a son James baptised in 1749, in Wonersh, Surrey. No indication that this is your James. The child was buried there the same year.

I have looked at the register, and both James and Mary are described as being of Mere.

Thank you Ros. What I'm looking for is a record of James's marriage to his first wife - also Mary, just to confuse. This isn't in the parish registers.
Oh, sorry.  I didn't realise there was a first wife/marriage you were looking for.  The one I found was James Davey to Mary Ford 1753.

How about this one? 5 Feb 1765 Plaitford, Wiltshire James Davey to Mary Humbory.
Hi Ros, the first marriage is going to be before 1748, and may be in Dorset or Somerset, rather than Wiltshire.
