Looking for info on James Martin who lived in Nova Scotia

+6 votes
I am at a standstill. I have traced my Martin ancestors to Joseph C. Martin born in Lunenburgh, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1801 and died in Oregon County, Missouri, USA on Oct. 10, 1883. I've also got his parents:

James Martin b. Dec. 25, 1757 in Philadelphia, PA.

Margaret Langiel b. 1767 Lunenburgh, Nova Scotia, Canada

They married on June 8, 1786 in St. Mary'S River, Guysborough, Nova Scotia

According to St. Mary's Township Book, St. Mary's River Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, James and Margaret settled there in 1811 with their 11 children.

I cannot find any more information than this. I cannot find James or Margaret's parents names and information, or why James moved to Nova Scotia unless he was a Loyalist.

If you look at the entry for Martin-2224, husband of Wickwire-6, you will see that 'James Martin' left Ireland for Canada in the 1700's. Yours may be a very distant relative to him, or just known about that area as a hotbed of Martins!  I have traced the lineage from Martin-2224 to me, (as commented on that page) but have not yet validated it. (Posted sources here, I do have them on Ancestry.com)

Thank you Allen for the information. Since I posted this question, I discovered that I took a wrong turn in my Martin lineage. I am not related to James Martin. I am now looking for information on William Martin Sr. Ns his son, Wm. Martin Jr.
Which William? There must be only a couple of those!

I do show the following in the tree of James Martin (2224) elsewhere:

James Sr (2224)

James Jr

William (1871 - 1974) (sibling to Elias, my ancestor)

I would look into the Langille family of Lunenburgh, Nova Scotia as a possible match for Margaret Langiel's parents.  http://www.reocities.com/cclangi/Genealogy/langille.html

David Langille and Marie Catherine Besanzan, married Dec. 3, 1753

Catherine Margaret LANGILLE Born: 26 JAN 1767

Thank you Kelly for the wonderful information on Catherine Margaret Langille. I had run into the names David langille and Marie Catherine Besanzan before, but didn't realize that my Margaret was actually Catherine Margaret.

Thank you again!

Now if I can get some answers on the mysterious James Martin!
