Hi there all you wonderful WikiTree'ers

One thing I love to do when I have a gap is to add newspaper bits to profiles, they have a way of adding a little extra flesh that brings a profile to life. So as I read through Sue Mackay's transcripts I search for possible matches on WikiTree and when I find them I send a link to the PM.

Tonight I came across an article from the Eastern Province Herald, published Friday 27 Jul 1860, on eGGSA's newspapers that really piqued my interest so I tried to google the date and location and nothing came up. I was pretty surprised to find no results at all.

Does anyone know what happened to 24 people on the morning of 25 July 1860?

Interesting - I'll see if my brother at Rhodes can find out more ....

In case it isn't obvious, this sounds like political satire rather than an actual accident or disaster.

It doesn't shed light on 25 July 1860, but there's good background on William Porter at this link. He seems to have been a contentious figure.

That was an interesting story, thanks Jim!

Awesome, thanks Philip laugh

Very interesting - thanks Jim!
